I always thought Mrs was the diminutive of Mistress because way back in the olden days it was Master and Mistress, hence Mr and Mrs ?
So you're saying all married women are Mistresses?

I figured the sales tax would have been much lower 40 years ago but it isn't really, that made go digging and I found most of NYS was 6% with county levies in 1981. Only moved a few points since then.

Related: we drove past the building that used to be the last operating Kmart in our area yesterday; it's now a Nissan dealership. Which somehow just seems about right.

I worked at Kmart while attending Community College in the early '80s - it's as pathetic as it sounds.
That receipt was because all the large dollar appliances and games had to be sold in the Appliance Department. One year Atari/Commodore sent us empty boxes for display use and they had blocks of styrofoam inside. One made its way to the stack of games.
One guy returns the empty box on 12/26 and was hacked. It took a while to figure out what happened. Didn't you open the box prior?
Strike 2 was we were sold out of the games and had no idea when the games would be in (no internet). Some kid had a E36 M3ty Christmas that year.
When I shut my last game store down last summer my current prices on those items were:
Atari 69.99
Casino 0.99
Asteroids 0.99
Space Invaders 1.99
