Growing up in Florida, you learn to watch out for these. Occasionally, I would still pick some up.
I didn't wear shoes for the duration of my summer vacations, so after the first month at my grandparent's my feet were so calloused that I could just scrape them off.
If you need to pull them out with your fingers (like any normal human), first moisten your fingers with some saliva.
More than once I have seen a tourist trying to avoid walking on the hot sand instead step on a bunch of sandspurs.
