My coworker in the neighboring bay is working on a Volt battery today and he was telling me that he was watching a guy on Youtube last night who was disassembling two failed Volt batterys to put them together into one good battery. He said the guy had no EV certifications or training and was just wearing regular rubber gloves, and the video ended with the two stripped down and ready to start swapping parts. He said "Well, that video was posted 9 months ago and there's no second part of him putting it together, so either his plan didn't work, or he's no longer with us anymore."

I cannot express just how much I approve of this statement.

I was working on my son's BMW and looked at three videos. One went way too fast and missed stuff. The second was an idiot. The third guy didn't have that much experience and screwed up 2 or three times. You could say that he sucked, but he had a great attitude and didn't edit out cussing at himself or the project. Wasn't the fastest way to go, but it kinda made it fun - as long as you watched a section ahead before doing the work.

There's a chicken butchering video out there that we watch every year before thinning the flock. The video is like 9 minutes long, and the first 10 seconds start off with "Okay, we're going to dispatch this chicken now" followed by the lady grabbing the bird with her bare hand and slitting it's throat. The whole video ought to be a master's course on how to make a how to video.

I guess I got lucky this morning. Over the weekend I was talking to my neighbor who is a professional wrench and mentioned a sporadic evap code in my minivan. "It's probably the Evaporative System Integrity Module. They get sticky and throw random fault codes. They're cheap and easy to replace." This morning I finally remembered to dig into what he said. I'm at work while searching, and stumbled upon a 3 min YouTube video that showed a guy replacing the module. Even without sound, I was able to figure out what he was doing.

ESIMs fail as often as they are easy to replace.
What is amusing is that VW uses a very similar looking device, and aftermarket units are all bad. Aftermarket ESIM valves are only bad 50-60% of the time.
