I get the left to right rule but order of operations supersedes it so following P-E-M-D-A-S multiplication (M) comes before subtraction (S) so we've got 220 X 0.5 = 110 and 230 - 110 = 120.

Notice that the 225 was multiplied by 3 before adding 7 and subtracting 8.  Again, P-E-M-D-A-S overrides the left to right rule.

The 5 was presented in the context of a sentence so it needed to be 5 Factorial Period (5!.) to be both mathematically and grammatically correct.

Fair enough though, I did get suckered into the trick and I did get an answer so I concede defeat and I'm now off to assault some of my co-workers with it; thanks!.
