This and a level switch in the oil pan is basically how the underhood oil tank thing worked in a Toyota Previa. Toyota knew nobody would bother to flip the driver's seat back so they could open the engine hatch to check/add oil, so they gave the van an automatic oil refiller. Worked great as long as people remembered to keep the auxiliary tank full, and the switch wasn't bad.
