I am looking for some ideas for sealing up a camshaft to prevent rust while I convert it from scrap into a table lamp. The oil sheen on there has been doing a good job but I would rather not have oily parts sitting around in my living room if I can help it. What sort of options do I have?
Bonus points if someone can tell me whether or not air cooled VW engines have hollow cams for easy wire routing.
I'd probably try to thoroughly degrease it and spray it with urethane clearcoat.
It's been a little while since I've seen an ACVW cam, and for the life of me, I can't recall whether it was hollow or not.

It actually works quite well, guns in museums are typically waxed to protect the metal (with something nicer than car wax). A lot of hunters use turtle wax on thier guns because its much lower maintenance than having to oil it down every time it gets wet.
Good enough for a bird gun, good enough for a table lamp.

+1 for clear coat. No mess and you won't even see that it's there.
