Something I have learned from years of reffing hockey in cold rinks, and outdoor rinks as well: You need to keep your core warm if you want to keep your fingers warm. Your extremities release heat from your body. If they're cold, your body doesn't have enough heat. Throw on an additional layer or two and see how it goes.

I am pretty sure that my wife goes to the basement for the sole purpose of turning on the lights.

In reply to Appleseed :

When my wife and three daughters leave the house in the morning, I start upstairs and work my way down.  Every bedroom has at least one light on.  The upstairs hallway light is on.  Often the downstairs hallway light is on.  The basement lights will be on, then both sets of lights in the kitchen, the downstairs bathroom, the laundry room, and the back hallway light.  All on.

And I'm the shiny happy person when I point that out.  Apparently it is possible to be in such a giant hurry that it's permissible to walk past a light switch without reaching out on your way by to use it.

One of my bosses has never shut a door or turned off a light in his life.

Almost everything I've ever done  is half-assed, half finished, rigged, or totally berkeleyed up. It all turns to E36 M3.

I don't know if that's the problem with me... I'm sitting at the desk now and my armpits are a bit sweaty and my body plenty warm but my hands are still slightly cold (need to turn the pad up a notch) and my toes are really cold.

I'm pretty sure I had a full on anxiety attack today. That was new, uncomfortable, and not something I ever want to do again.

*sigh* Got a text & email from our bank about a potential fraudulent charge on our credit card, and after calling up and talking with their customer service was able to confirm that yes, someone had tried using it to both order several hundred dollars worth of something from a men's wear store and for a few cents are a medical service place (presumably as a test). Which means that we once again have to cancel our cards and get new ones, which will mean having to find and update all of the things that auto-pay using that card...

Chase notified us of a fraudulent attempt on November 3rd. New cards arrived on the 4th. On the 12th, my wife fell for a pretty damn obvious phishing attempt. Luckily all she gave was the credit card info. Reviewed the statement, found $500 of new charges that weren't us. New cards arriving tomorrow.

Our new cards will be here tomorrow, and they've got it set up so we can still use our cards here locally until then since they're how we pay for pretty much everything. It's been a while since this has happened at least- long enough that I don't remember when the last time we had to get a new card was.

Two for the price of one.

1) I was working on the KTM today setting up the rear suspension. Just as I'm attempting to install the shock for the third time I push a little too hard to align the bottom bolt and the bike falls off the stand, middle finger is caught between the swingarm and the shock, and gets mangled. I'll lose at least one nail, maybe two

2) The online bank (1) where I hide my bike money wasn't paying E36 M3 considering its title as a high interest savings account. So I decided to move it all to another online bank (2) I left because their website was clearly made by and for 5 year olds and it was impossible to navigate, but now they're paying. But Bank 1 makes it darn near impossible to get the money out. So I have to order a draft that will come by courier. I think I'm smart by being pro active and call bank 2 ahead of time. I haven't used my card in a long time, I'm going to deposit a stack of coin in the next few days, is everything OK with my card?

(Makes sounds like he's checking something) Yes sir, you're good to go.

Draft arrives today, I drive into town, try 3 times. It works fine until the receipt is supposed to come out then it says, we've encountered a problem, and spits the card and draft out. I drive home and call. Yes, you tried to enter the wrong pin too many times so it locked your account. No I didn't, and that's not what happened. Well, that's what it says here, you'll have to reset your pin, which is a whole 'nother pain in the arss. Berkeleyin banks ain't making it easy these days.

And I bet it still doesn't work tomorrow after I reset my pin

I have this problem if I sit at my desk for too long. I ordered a heated floor mat for under the desk. It makes all the difference in the world.

I always have run-ins with my bosses over this.  They ask you to half-ass it or hack it together and I refuse, because I'll have twice the work later to fix the original problem, plus the the new problem half-assing the first problem caused.

It's a never ending job training managers that "There's never time to do it right, but always time to do it twice." is a lie.

That's what I did yesterday after trying a few other things with no success. Actually, I ordered a heated footrest, so hopefully it will help with my posture and cold feet at the same time... will see when it arrives tomorrow.

Vision was starting to degrade again after cataract removal on both eyes last December.  Was checked out yesterday and they laser squeegeed off the deposits that were accumulating on the lens implants and vision is much improved (win!).

However, at the moment, I've got so many floaters running around it's giving me the collywobbles.

Wife: how much is this worth?  Some acquaintances want to buy it.

Me: They were selling for just over $200 each new.  And we want to pass on a good deal that we got to these folks. So how about $150 for both?

Wife: I told them $125.  I hate selling things. It makes me sick to my stomach!

I mean, whatever.  I don't really care that much except that while it's not something the kids want anymore, these were technically their "big" Christmas presents several years ago.  So I feel like we have a fiduciary duty to them to not just give it away.  But you told me you have no idea what these things are worth and you asked me what we should ask.  I told you.  Then you just completely ignored my valuation.  Why waste my time?  And if you don't feel comfortable, then have me work with them!

Communication is dead. Ghosting is the norm. I'm not talking about in the dating since because thank God, I don't have to deal with that.

But now in my professional life and when buying/selling anything, no one is returning correspondence anymore. It's rare.

So I've been told...

As I slowly move in with the GF, I have been paying closer attention to my monthly bills. I noticed my cell phone bill went from $60 to $90 this month. Upon further investigation, it appears that my military discount fell off. So I redo the process as it's really easy online. Well now next months bill with the discount is $75. Why did it go up so much? I've made no changes to the plan at all.

Well, I'm jumping ship. I've been with Big Red for almost 20 years now. I've had enough.

I had a trial SIM with Mint, which uses T-Mo's network. I noticed no difference in service. The trial was only 25 messages, 25 minutes and 250mg of data. I blew through the data on my way to work the first day streaming music and using Google Maps. I can get a plan with both my GF and me with 10gb data for each line for $60 a month. She pays $80 a month with AT&T. So this will save us real money.

Also, I noticed that all the discounts for my internet expired. I'm paying $100 a month for 30 meg cable internet. My GF is paying $80 a month through the same ISP. I can get 500 meg fiber internet through a competitor for $45 a month.

It's amazing how much money gets thrown away when you don't pay attention.

For a couple months this past spring, we had to borrow my sister in laws car, an early 2000's focus with 100,00 miles. We offered to pay her some cash at the beginning, but she insisted she just wanted to some help with her house project in return. So we helped for a few days pouring concrete and putting down flooring, figuring that was even. But then she kept asking for help here or there "as repayment". Sure, fine, we really appreciated being able to use the car, so not that big of deal to keep helping. When we returned the car we gave her 50 bucks to pay for an oil change.

But now, 8 months after the fact, she takes the car to a mechanic and he does tie rod ends, ball joints, brakes and tires. She comes to us saying "we really should split the cost..." Sigh...split the cost of maintenance items on your 20 year old car with a tick over 100,000 miles, that we drove for maybe 5,000 miles? That makes total sense.

We'll pay it to avoid the drama, but this is why I don't trade labor with 95% of the people we know. I hate the feeling of being indebted to people, and using money leaves no ambiguity on whats considered even.
