I have seen it and it is fairly amazing what someone can do sometimes with the proper amounts of skill and booze.

One thing I have to say is that barrel would be heavy as hell! For about $60-70 you could dig up a profiled AK barrel.

Oh and for those that are interested here is a link with step by step instructions for building an AK from a receiver blank. I will be doing some of these here soon. Doesn't mention heat treating though, kind of an important step.

I knew you would be in this thread some where.

My buddy from my old job helped me build a couple of AMD 65s. He actually made his own flats for some of his Kalashnikov kits from steel stock. He had all of the jigs to do this stuff.

Also, I am curious what are the "US made parts" in that kit to make it legal.

In reply to Thinkkker:

Parts kits can be had between $250-600 depending on origin and type and if it has a barrel or not. I have the specs for the receivers and internal rails both of which can be made at home and will require heat treating. You can get the forms to shape the receiver and make the job much easier.

Anti Stance Of course I am here AKs being made from shovels are just cool. The guy that did this had a ton of skill. How do you like your AMDs?

Loved them, but had to sell them. I have pictures I can post up when I get home. It was kinda interesting the way we built them. Since the kits have the original piston and piston tube with no barrel we had to get creative in putting it together. Finding an AMD barrel that has the gas port at the correct spot to have the gas block the correct distance from the front trunion means getting a virgin barrel and correct tapping the hole.

I came up with the idea of using a standard AK barrel, piston and piston tube then milled the barrel down to get the front sight closer to the gas block.

Heat treating? What needs heat-treating?

In reply to stroker:

On the receiver you need to heat treat the holes around the trigger group as it is a more high stress area. Also the internal rails need to be heat treated as well if they are home made.

do most of the prefab sheetmetal receivers come heat-treated or is that something they expect the buyer to do? I'm thinking Nodak stuff...?

Completed receivers like the Nodak ones should should be heat treated and ready to go when you buy them. It is just the 80% and flats that havn't been heat treated yet.

Nodak is about the best AK receiver you can get these days by the way.

I have a nodak retro lower for my m16a1. I bought my rails and flats for my amds from nodak as well. We heat treated the rails an rivot holes at the shop. I believe we cooled them in old oil.

So you just riveted your rails in instead of spot welding them? How did that hold up? Old oil works well for the quenching after you do the heat up on parts.
