I have a general question for the lawyers and experts here.  I am not seeking specific advice and won't hold you accountable for any advice you offer.

I have a minor issue that I hope does not expand to be major:

My (deceased) father and I share all 3 names.  On my birth certificate and SS card, I am Name1 Name2 Name3 Jr.  On my license and passport, there is no 'junior' designation.  SS flatly refuses to change my card to drop the Jr.

This means I can't get a federally compliant ID.  But that's not the real issue, though I do need to solve it.  The real issue is:

Other paperwork, such as the deed to my house, the titles to my cars, etc. may or may not have the Jr. designation.  I would have to pull it all out and check, but it may be fairly random whether that is included or not.  I had a tendency to use it more before he died, and not so much after... but even that is not 100% consistent.

If I get a new passport and drivers license issued so they match my birth certificate and license (Jr.), will that cause issue for other documents above that don't include Jr.?

Welcome to bureaucratic hell.

In reply to Duke :

Not an identical situation, but possibly relevant: I have two middle names. Pete is actually my 2nd middle name, and for whatever reason the one my parents chose to use. Neither my Social Security card nor driver’s licenses have room for a 2nd middle name, though I’ve chosen to include on credit/debit cards, etc. where possible.

I’ve never had a passport, but it’s never caused me any serious issues over the years - other than Selective Service thinking I was 2 different people when I turned 18. I’ve had FBI security checks/clearance for previous jobs, and it was never an issue there either.

I expect that as long as “Jr.” is on your birth certificate you’ll be fine when you get your passport. FWIW my wife & all-4 kids recently got passports and the process was surprising hassle-free for all of them.

Thanks for the input.  I just don't want them to suddenly decide I don't own my house because it is deeded to not-Junior but my ID and passport have now been changed to Junior.  Etc etc etc for all the miscellaneous documents a modern adult has floating around.

On deed you could probably clear it up if you ever need to execute a new deed  for example on the sale of your house it could be drafted as " name one two three being one and the same as name one two three Junior. "  I would just get passport, driver's license and Social Security card to all three match and call it a day.

pretty common situation

In reply to Duke :

Everything financial should be tied to your SSN, so that should be pretty straightforward and basically irrelevant to the name printed/signed on the individual documents.

Changing it shouldn’t be impossible.  I am Wally the third, but when I got my license the DMV folks couldn’t figure out how to put it on the card and being young I didn’t bother fixing it. When I got called for transit my license and SS card had to match.  They sent me to a near by social security office because they knew it would go better than dealing with the dmv.  I went in, filled out a form, had a replacement card and was back at the transit office in under an hour including stopping for a pretzel.

AARP and American family insurance  think I’m my dad even though we have different middle names.

I’ve got the same problem. I think I might join AARP.

I have this issue so I middle initial everything. They even tryed to take my dad's child support out of my paycheck a few times. My I.D and bank account have my middle initial, the loan and all related house paperwork does not. The only time it's ever been an issue was a new lady at the bank who wouldn't let me make my house payment because I forgot my atm card and she couldn't verify it was my mortgage.

Spent an hour waiting at the SS office to be told in 30 seconds flat that since they were the feds, theirs was bigger, so they win. The state will have to issue me a new license, which isn’t really the issue.

The issue is what will happen when my new Jr ID no longer matches all my not-Jr car titles, etc.

For many years I wished I was a "Jr.".   My father and I had the same first name, last name, and middle initial.  But not the same middle name.  And somehow we ended up using the same nickname.  Lots of confusion and hilarity until I moved away to another state.
