my FIL has a big 40x60 pole barn with 6 lights on the rafters. he had some 125 or 150W screw in incandescent bulbs up there. the base is the same as a regular lamp or house light screw in 120v bulb. well, we left them on one night, and now they are all toast. we could just get more, but it got me looking into LEDs and other lighting options. but i almost immediately got lost in the foray of terminology and nomenclature associated with screw base lamps, lumens, wattage and so on.
so i post this question to GRM: what are the options?
rules: no base changing. i want this to be a screw in and go deal. 120v. max price i would guess to be about 3x the cost of a incandescent replacement, so about $15 per bulb max.
aaaand GO!

We recently had a thread on this, and I and others recommended the cheap 48" LED shop lights from Costco. You could get some of those screw-in plug adapters and plug the Costco lights into those for an easy install.

and what's the spacing like? You're probably going to want to pay attention to the throw angle of the light.
what about using something like this to spread the light around a bit more? looks like you can find them in the $5-10 range after some searching.
Just get the biggest "watt equivalent" led bulbs your local store has on hand. I like the "200w equivalent" bulbs that use #45W myself.
Beyond that, if you don't want to change fixtures consider adding the reflective shades that screw in between the base and the bulb. They are @$15 each, but they direct what light you are getting down to where it is used, and it's about a 30% improvement in usable lighting regardless of what bulbs you use.
i appreciate the info guys, thanks. if i think about it, ill post back after we decide what to do.
