I once interviewed with 13 separate people for a job that I didn't get. Two phone interviews, six interviews at one location, five at the other. Then "We're going to put off hiring for this position for the time being."

Well, one of the owners sent me an e-mail today requesting a time for a second phone interview. I will be speaking with him again on Monday around lunch. Fingers crossed!
Well, I have news. They have asked to defer the phone interview in lieu of a second face-to-face. At first I was concerned, because it cost me over 500 bucks to go to the last one.
Then I got an e-mail stating that they were willing to pay for my gasoline and lodging.
Seems like they are serious...I guess we will see. This time, all I lose is one day of work.
The thing that sucks is that we are at the end of our lease at the end of the month. So it looks like we have to sign a new lease at the new place, then if I get it, find a way to buy out the contract...(could be expensive).
Sounds good.
I had buy my last contract. Expensive especially when your 4 x 4 transmission goes too.
I have a rental house with no contract, no lease, and no occupancy permit. Probably breaking at least one ordnance, but we will tackle that issue as it appears. Hopefully I'll be buying a house in the city before then. Found a few I like that aren't in too bad if shape for around 100 sacks.
Is there a month to month option on the lease? Speak with the office about it. Even if the short term option costs more per month it will likely save money by keeping your options open.
Good Luck!
Do NOT sign a new lease. They will want you to sign a new lease, but they should be willing to take money month-to-month instead of sitting on an empty apartment.

job hunting expenses are tax deductible. but they should spring for a flight. driving is inefficient.

Therein lies the problem. We already signed our "intent to vacate" papers two months ago before I had even heard about the job opening.
We also already put down a deposit on a lease at a new complex.
The current apartment was threatening to jack up the rent over 100 per month, so we found a bigger place for less money... Now it's gonna REALLY cost me.

I know this means a lot to you, and I am not trying to be disrespectful, but it doesn't sound to me like they are very serious at all.
Asking a potential applicant to drive 800 miles a SECOND TIME and offer to pay for gas only is weak.
This is a business expense to them. There is no reason they shouldn't fly you in. Don't they care about their business? Or are they so broke (or cheap) that they have to take it out of your hide? (a very bad sign).
The last time I interviewed long distance they flew me in, put me up in a fancy hotel, treated me to several very fancy meals, and once they hired me paid me for all of my interview time. 3 full days worth (at a VERY high rate).
If they were serious, they'd do the same. Are they trying to woo you with an offer of 16 hrs of additional unpaid windshield time and a little bit of gas? If that's the best they can offer, they won't be treating you right once you are hired, that's for darned sure. Sounds like they are looking for slave labor.
I hope I am wrong.
I recommend pushing back. Don't beg for a job- show them you are valuable to their business. Tell them you have acted in good faith, and need in return a bit more consideration of your time and energy. I know it's scary, but you need to show them some leadership initiative. It is VERY LIKELY that they will appreciate it and respect you for it.
If they don't, you might not have missed much.
I think SV is right, but only morally so. I think given the current employment climate, most companies know they can crap right on your face, and you will thank them and ask for another. Theres just soooo many people looking for work. A good company would schmooze you if they really wanted you. Most companies dont "really" want anybody awesome, because awesome is expensive. They want someone mediocre, who will settle for mediocre treatment.
My last position was drying up due to a contract not being renewed. I started the job hunt and began sending resumes to a lot of different places. I started a Linkedin acct, updated my resume, began networking any old connections I could. After probably sending 50+ resumes out, I got exactly 2 responses. I ended up taking a position in a small firm. The posting online listed $xx,xxx dollars per year salary right in the description. Once I was interviewed a few times, they offered me the position. That was great... escept that because I accidentally told them my current job had an expiration date, and they knew I was up against a wall, they offered me about 7% less per year, stating the 7% would come after a 12 month observation period.
Anyway, Im letting them crap on me cuz I need a paycheck. If they realize Im awesome (much like our dear OP is awesome), they MAY get around to treating me better. My principals arent worth defaulting on my mortgage. Sorry that got longwinded, but for now, Im willing to compromise...any port in a storm so to speak. I think anyone in a similar situation (needs work NOW) is willing to settle in the short term. I wouldnt push the issue too hard...yet.

I get crapped on enough at work as it is. I am willing to take this chance if it means potential happiness.
Congrats Brad! Even though I sold my 944 you can hook me up on BMW parts - I've had 3 orders arrive from ECS in the last 3 weeks already, and there will be more. Good luck with the move, and hopefully you don't get screwed too hard in breaking the lease on your new place in ATL. Now we will have to merge this thread with the "moving sucks" thread from a few weeks back
Congratulations Brad!! Awesome to hear. Sucks you are moving up to Ohio now. Who else will make midnight travels to Sebring with me now?
You'll need to log in to post.
