I fly a glider. Last night's rain evaporates and rises with the ground warming. Clouds show us where the columns of rising air is located, it's the air cooling off; but it's an elevator !!

Sometimes jet people complain because we are lined up next to the taxi way. In busy times, like the Travers Weekend, traffic is especially heavy, while the Newport crowd uses the FAA freq to order cucumber sandwiches and limos. http://www.saratogaracetrack.com/travers/

Today there was a complaint.....

Some guy called the tower and bitched that a glider was circling his house checking out his 15 year old daughter sunning by the pool.

Really? All the times I've flown, I have yet to see ANYONE in a pool, not even little kids splashing around.

Maybe he should disseminate pics of the daughter to all pilots so we know where not to fly.....

OK, rant off.

Dan

wasn't there a guy arrested a year or two ago for catching thermals off of a nuke plant?

One hand holding the binoculars, the other operating the "stick" would make it hard to fly...

That 15-year-old was so hot she created thermals above the pool? Congrats to Mom and Dad's impressive gene combination and to the pilot who took advantage.

No pics needed because that would be creepy; real creepy.

how low was he flying? I'm no pilot but I assume 'checking out' distance is WAYY too low for safe gliding

My 14yr old son disagrees.

I probably would wreck a glider trying to check out Zooey Dechanel

I wonder if I got called on circling a massive mansion fire on Lake Geneva. I'm sure they had bigger things to worry about than someone in a Spam can Cessna rubbernecking at a fire.

914Driver, If I took that call, I would have informed the father that, "I'm sorry, Sir, your daughter's just not that hot..."

Sigh this is a tough one. Are they familiar with aviation?

The parent and daughter in this case are not informed enough about aviation to understand that you had tons more to concentrate on rather than the tiny little dot among the other tiny dots on the ground.

At the same time as the laws for unmanned drones are sorely late in coming. So we get the unrestrained fear of the "EVIL young men performing photography of unknowing women" I am sure it has happened and at the same time figure it is a one in five hundred thousand event in drone usage.

I have two daughters and admit I would get rather upset if a drone started hovering around my backyard with them in their bathing suits! But I know the difference between gliders and other aircraft versus little drones. So if we can educate them and make them Aviation FANS then they won't keep shutting down the little airports. Invite them to go flying with you to see what could be seen. Hopefully after the first minute of teaching them that there was no way you were seeing anybody they will have a great time flying.

TV Tropes says that Zooey Deschanel is a "Manic Pixie Dreamgirl". Personally, I find her to be an "Annoying Self-absorbed Bitch".

I've never met her, so i have no opinion about her personality... but appearance-wise, she looks like an average hipster chick.

I can understand the OP rant. It's hard to convey to an paranoid father how unimportant and unnoticable his daughter is from a glider a few thousand feet in the air...

If I was the guy who took that call, this would probably get me fired, but I'd want to just laugh and hang up the phone so that he calls back even angrier for even more lulz.

it's simple.. "Sir, can you see the pilot?"

"um, no.. he's too far away to see clearly"

"what makes you think he can see your daughter then?"

Isn't the more stressing concern that his 15yo daughter is out "Sunning" herself? Or has good parenting fallen the wayside to the Jersey Shore and pre-40 skin cancer?

There was an incident near Hartsville, SC. They actully threatened to shoot him down. I think the guy was going to sue, but ended up dying before it all played out.

The sailplane pilot was in the wrong there, he should have known that there's a no-fly zone around nuclear plants, but he decided to go for the sweet artificial thermals anyway. He was lucky he didn't get shot down. That's just one step below "land on Area 51's runway/buzz White House" on the aviation stupid-meter.

This is an airplane thread so I read that as P-40 skin cancer. I imagined an orange Flying Tiger.
