for them to really remember a trip. Both my brother and I have fond memories of the first time my Dad taking us on "big" trips. For me it was Road America. We were each about 10 and we agree that you need to be about that old. The reason I'm asking is that at some point he's retiring from his job in SoCal and I have 7 and 5 year old girls. I plan to take them to Disneyland at some point before he leaves SoCal, probably when I go to help him move. That gives me a couple of years to save for the trip. Any thoughts on this, or Disneyland v Disneyworld?

No recommendations on the Disneyplaces, I can't stand anything that commercially driven.
But, I'd agree that about 10 is safe for them remembering the trip for a lifetime. I've been waiting to go to Alaska for 7 years now because I want all my kids to remember it. My youngest is 8, time to start putting nickels and dimes away.
It depends on the kid, but I have good memory of trips and such as young as 5. For something like Disney I would just want them big enough for the big rides.
Yeah I remember several trips from the time I was 3 or 4. Just don't ask me for details about anything in the last 15-years. Or what I had for lunch.
I have memories of trips, museums and mlb baseball games when I was 6 or 7. The younger one might be a bit young but they should remember it if they have a good time.
5-7 years old is a great age for Disneylanfd/Magic Kingdom. They will probably remember it. Definitely your 7 year old daughter. I have 12 & 9 year old boys. They remember a lot from past trips. If I was planning on a big cross-country driving trip, I'd wait a few years. But Disney, you're in the golden zone now.
I was five when dad took us on the big family vacation. I don't remember anything except for the whole airplane experience. The seating arrangement was all berkeleyed up and I volunteered to sit away from the family unit. Back then you could smoke on airplanes and sitting away from my folks meant fresh air...yay! The stewardess pined those little brass wings on me and made me feel like I was the pilot. good times.
Can't imaging what its like for kids nowadays...TSA and all that crap.

i can remember disney world when i was 7
I was 6 when we went to Upper Michigan to go camping.. I remember most of that trip. I was two when we went to Canada to see my Great Grandmother before she died, I remember a few bits and pieces of that one
You guys have incredible memories. I dont remember E36 M3 from below age 10 except snipits of things. And no, I am not an alcoholic and have never done any drugs ever.
Honestly, I wouldnt try memorable things until closer to 10. Its like teenagers going to europe, they dont "really" understand what they are seeing before the age of 18-20. That E36 M3 takes life experience to truly understand.
Little kids are happy doing almost anything. I'd wait a bit past 7 is all I am saying.

Supports my opinion. At the end of the day, I wonder if the people who say they remember truly do REMEMBER or if their brain is just sort of filling things in. Maybe they remember the emotion and it forms itself from there? I ain't no berkeleying psychologist :p
My folks took me on a 2 week trip around the western end of the counrty when I was 9. I remember most of it well. Never had in interest in the Disney stuff, I think my parents were relieved.
We took our son to Disney World at 4. I don't care if he remembers it when he is 30, we had such an amazing time. At his age, everything was magic. That made it great.
Take pictures, tell them about how great of a parent you were when they have a kid. ;)

Just took my boys, 7 and 4.5 to Disney last spring. It was just about the perfect age, I think. The biggest concern is making sure the smallest kid is big enough for all the rides. I think 44" will get them on every ride in Disney, Epcot, Animal Kingdom. No idea about Universal.
