while cleaning my fridge the other day, it dawned on me the are designed wrong.
They should be half as deep an twice as wide. Much easier to access stuff in the back or forgetting what is there.
Yeah, I know, more wall space.
Think of the convenience.
Not really half as deep but they do make shallower refrigerators that are all fridge then a separate matching freezer. I always wanted that setup but the fancy kitchen in our new house didn't have room for it in its elaborate cabinet setup and I didn't have the heart to go changing it when they're very nice cabinets.
here.
While we're at it, can we get one with an ice dispenser that actually works properly? Every fridge I've ever had makes noise for a few seconds, then unleashes the contents of an entire glacier into my glass. Then when I'm done and halfway across the kitchen it spits another coupe chunks out on the floor just out of spite.

We have one where the defrost heater doesn't warm the drain - so ice forms, plugs the drain - results in ice build up and water in the bottom of the drawers. The GRM fix - bare copper wires around the heating element and into the drain (new samsung fridge).

Same here, but a Kenmore. Probably built by the same company
I hate that. Ours is ok on crushed, but near impossible on cubes

My friend's house has the fridge above the kitchen counter where cabinets would be. Not as deep, convenient?
Look into "SubZero" refrigerators. Spendy, but very nice.

How are you going to fit a pizza box in that?

You want access to your food, AND an ice dispenser that works?! That's crazy talk!

No need, box is always empty.
The problem with wider-but-shallower is that it's a lot less efficient. Ideally you want minimum surface area, because that's where the heat is leaking into your fridge.
While we're on the topic of fridge rants, I hate the trendy "fridge at the top, drawer freezer at the bottom" style. Sure, it's nice and convenient to get things out of the fridge, but the space utilization on the freezer section is terrible, you can barely fit anything in it. I much prefer side-by-side models.

I hate pizza in the fridge, it drys it out... I throw mine in the oven so the dogs wont eat it
In reply to JG Pasterjak:
It just knows the dog always wants one

I'm glad they sell many styles, then; I can't stand the tiny mailslot of a freezer that you get with the side-by-side models. Give me a traditional top/bottom or freezer-drawer-on-bottom style any day.
But again, my favorite is the separate fridge and freezer, if you have room for it!
Most lack this feature tho.
In reply to codrus:
Surface area would be the same just not as square.

Surface area to volume would not be the same.

We have had all the configurations. Right now we have 5-door model. Freezer on the bottom, two doors up top(with ice dispenser in one), and two drawers in between. We use one drawer for sandwich stuff and the other for salad/produce.
There have been many days when the drawers are the only part we use. Very convenient and saves on energy usage.
Who decided that the fridge needed to be connected to the internet?

How else would I be able to watch the milk go bad? I was looking for a nee toothbrush and saw one that was Bluetooth compatible. The only thing I could figure is it could tell my dentist I don't floss enough so I can stop lying to him.

My parents have a bottom freezer fridge and the freezer part is terrible.
Side by sides are useless devil spawn appliance. No room for a pizza box.
Conventional fridge for me please.

We have one that came with the house. I hope it never has to be replaced or I will have to sell a kidney. Its the best fridge I have ever had and built like a tank.
