Soon we'll be heading to Savannah for a little R&R. I haven't been there in years. We'll be staying downtown. Any recommendations for cool things to see and do while in town? (And yes, I know that Roebling is nearby--we'll see if we make it there....)
If you are a Civil War buff there are Fort Pulaski, Fort Jackson (I think that's the name), and Fort McAllister (nearby).
The Eight Air Force has a museum at the airport. Years ago it had a simulator that was like flying a bomber mission over Germany. One of our senior club members was a B-24 pilot and he was a bit emotional.
Hutchison Island across the Savannah River has a race course that is used from time to time. It was built for Indy Lights and our club used to drive around it on our yearly pilgrimage to Savannah. So did a lot of other folks so I think they outlawed it.
Savannah is good. Wife and I spent our 1st wedding aniversary there. We don't really do touristy things, we just walk around a lot and check out the sites.

Eat as Mrs. Wilkes' Boarding House. Get there early for lunch, wait in line and be friendly with the people you're waiting with. You'll be dining with them. Johnny Harris' was good but it wasn't the stand out Mrs. Wilkes' was
Also if you haven't, watch / read Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil. I liked both and for better or worse Savannah is dripping with references to the book. Also, wear any surplus Military radiation suits you can find. There's a lost, unexploded H-bomb in the harbor.

Go down to Hilton Head and take the sail cruise on the old 3 mast boat up to Savannah at sundown.
If you don't go to the 8th Air Force museum, the ghost of Jimmy Doolittle will haunt you.

The trolly tour is a good way to get around and get some history. You can get on and off all day which is nice. I've never braved the line for Paula Deen's restaurant, but a little known fact is you can walk right in during lunch and get a takeout plate for pretty cheap. Grab the exact same food off the buffet as everyone else, just skip the hours of waiting.

According the all-knowing trolley driver, the spot where that was filmed doesn't even have a park bench anymore. You can stand where it was once at though!

Miley Cyrus is currently filming a movie there and on Tybee Island through the end of next week. Might be a good time to avoid.
My family has had reservations next week on Tybee for over a year for our family reunion- the first one in over 40 years.

In 1980 I was on the Navy ship Savannah (auxillary ammunition/refrigerated stores/oiler) and we sailed up the Savannah River to the city. They didn't tell us that...

Reviving a long-dead thread: If you haven't gone yet, be sure to make reservations. Wife and I took a trip on a whim thinking: "Meh, we'll find a hotel when we get there." Stopped at 5 or 6 hotels in Savannah - no rooms. Drove out to tybee. The only hotel that had a room was Econolodge...@$200/night. We finally went 5 miles or so south of town and stayed in the scariest hotel I've ever stayed in...ev4r.
There's at least one killer seafood place on the water, where we consumed oysters in prepared in pretty much every format you could possibly imagine, and a good record store downtown that had some pretty rare stuff. I spent WAY too much money in there. That's about all I know.
We were there for the July 4th weekend and had a very nice time. We made reservations before going and stayed at a nice bed and breakfast in the historical district. At $200/night it wasn't cheap, but it was really, really nice. We had a living room/kitchenette plus a bedroom, so it was like having a suite. Honestly, I was looking for more of a vacation than staying at the usual motel and wanted some space. Our room was just off a courtyard, and the staff was pleasant. Breakfast was good, too. Downtown was a 15-minute walk away.
