Maybe mine isn't as applicable to the Auto Industry, however, over the last 9 years I've held jobs in manufacturing businesses in:

The Boat/Marine sector
Defense (electrical distribution systems)
Oil and Gas related support/construction support
Aerospace <- UAW shop workers...............I'm amazed there are any Boeing parts still made in this country
Oil/Gas/Towing/Defence

As for UAW it's not just wages and benefits, stuff like X amount of floor space must be converted to break rooms so there is at least one seat in each section of each building for when everyone goes on break, and long lists of all other kinds of ridiculous garbage.

Gentlmen, this is the sort of educational and eye-opening discussion I was hoping it would be. It came to mind today when I heard a news bite on the radio regarding the soon-to-be new Focus plant. It ended with a comment about the UAW being publicly most displeased about the plant's location. The GRM forum has proved, once again, to be a valuable goldmine of diverse experiences informing diverse opinions.
