Seems like Google and Microsoft are no not playing nice anymore and the sync feature between my Android phone and my laptop is no longer capable. I can get it to go from the phone to the laptop but not back the other way. Since I am due for a new phone as mine is 4 years old do I go I phone or should I be assimilated by the Microsoft Borg and get a Windows 8 phone?
I use the google calendar sync tool and it seemed to work the last I saw. I use google calendar on my iPhone and the sync tool worked great.
I used to have an Android, and now have a Windows Phone (my company provides me with a phone so I can't complain too much). But I long to go back to an Android phone. My phone (Lumia 1020) is a good phone, but the limited range of apps, and hokey Microsoft operating system kinda sucks.
Plus a windows phone doesn't support the Torque app.

They stopped supporting calendar sync a year or so ago, and finally killed it this week. It's on my list of things to do today to figure out how to replace it.
I had a Windows Phone many years ago, and I swore them off FOREVER. I know that they are vastly different now, but I also swore off sticking my hand into open flames and eating ghost chilis...some things will burn you no matter how many years pass.
I am an iPhone guy personally, but the Android system is still vastly superior to Windows.

I have been using TouchDown on my android tablets and phones for a few years now and it is awesome. Best 20 bucks I ever spent. Syncs perfectly every time and the security stuff that Exchange pushes out to the phone (exchange admin being able to remotely wipe phone for example) is sandboxes into the data that TouchDown manages not the whole phone.

Crap, I wasn't aware of that. I use Lotus notes at the new place and due to restrictions, I can't access my gmail account from work so I hadn't noticed. I had been using it just fine a few months ago before I lost my job at HP, so even though it isn't supported going forward, it could still work for a little while at least.

Are you sure? All my work calendar E36 M3 is still syncing to my Galaxy S3. I will try to add another event to the calendar at work tomorrow and see if it pops up on my phone. Considering the emails are working I am sure it will work. Also how did you have your email account setup on your phone?
I have my personal email using gmail, then I also have 2 work email addresses that use the default email app. I specified the interval at which my phone checks the email server depending on the time of day. So mine is syncing stuff from the email server, not directly from my work computer. Does exactly what I need it to. You can probably just set your sync to manual if you dont want it checking for emails frequently. EDIT for some reason when I thought you said sycing you meant emails. disregard if not the case.
BTW I will be the first to admit that something happened within the past week to my phone, some update or something, my phone has turned to complete E36 M3. its like it has a mind of its own. I cant get any computer to recognize it as a USB device, I have tried maybe 5 different usb cords, it seems to charge when it feels like it, automatically sets itself to "driving mode" when plugged into the cig lighter charger in the car, whatever the berkeley that is. Also it was automatically trying to run this "docking" thing over and over. I want to throw the thing out the damn window about 7 times a day.
I swear this is planned obsolescence and someone wants me to upgrade this berkeleying antique phone. shiny happy people.
No complaints about my windows phone. But It's also the only smartphone I've ever had so take that as you will.
I got this message a few weeks ago:
Important Announcement about Google Calendar Sync
Almost two years ago, we announced that we ended support for Google Calendar Sync. Starting on August 1, 2014, this app will no longer sync events between your Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar.
You can continue to access all of your Google Calendar events at calendar.google.com or on your mobile devices. Follow these instructions to uninstall Google Calendar Sync from your computer.
Monday the 4th I started getting error messages from sync.

FWIW we're running most of the Asphault Adventures rallies through smartphone apps these days. When investigating an app we don't even bother to see if it has a windows phone version because they rarely do. Our current 2 apps which are in trials are both iPhone and Android only although one does have a web version you could technically use on a windows phone if you had to.
I was able to replicate the functionality of Google Calendar Sync with this: http://www.pppindia.com/calendar-sync/index.html
Edit: Works great, except I have to manually allow it to access outlook every time it wants to sync.
