To be honest, I've heard much better guitar renditions. Eric Johnson, for example... And none have really ever topped Hendrix. They flubbed more than a few notes. The funny thing about the SSB on a guitar is its a major scale (I always played it in C), which few guitarists ever play on a regular basis.

maybe better, and maybe more perfect- but has there ever been a heavier version? you gotta admit that it is a pretty metal song compared to other national anthems..

No... not really. Even if done by Metallica, loud distorted guitars don't automatically make a tune "heavy". I've heard "heavier" versions sung when the singer is really good and can put just the right amount of vibrato on the right notes and at the right tempo. This version just comes across like James and Kirk goofing off.
