I believe that every time you have the chance to do a "Start your Sunday with Scotch" event you should!
Aussie Steve and I are claiming the rights to the franchise, but we will allow rights as long as we are invited!
This all started because I needed something he had and it involved payment with a liquid only bottled in Northrn Europe... I got more than I bargained for.
When the day was over I was warm and fuzzy, there was a stain in my garage, the dog barked at children, we blew up the RX8 engine, we blew up the _armtruck and fixed the Cruze all because we Started our Sunday with Scotch!
Notes from the inaugural event:
Ardbeg Corryvrecken is truly an amazing thing. The bold bravado of the peaty initial hit are quickly washed away with the warmth of layer upon layer of flavor. Best Scotch under $100/bottle is not an overstatement. The "no swimming" sign on the side of the box is pretty good advice, you only want a little water in your glass!
Glenfiddich 14 Year is made specifically to kick the Kentucky bourbon industry's ass. It does. Oh my it does. Smooth, sweet, proper scent ant body. This is a very good bottle for a cigar and a book, or a Texas Hold 'em game!

Not into the peaty Islay Scotches. A smooth Highland is where I'm most happy. Something like the Aberfeldy 21 year (of which I picked up a bottle at the distillery in Aberfeldy, Scotland a couple years back). Aberfeldy also distills the Scotch that is at the core of the Dewar's White Label blend, as well.
Interestingly enough, when we visited Scotland and toured a number of the distilleries, they all said the same thing: blends are where the secrets are kept. Single malts are really just beer with some extra steps, no secret at all. But they spend an inordinate amount of effort keeping the blend recipes secret. And the distilleries all swap single malts of various ages and regions to get the blends the way they want them...

As a self-proclaimed bourbon snob, I take this as a great challenge. Tumblers at dawn!

Tumblers? You'll be left only self-proclaimed if you don't do yourself a favor and get a few Glencairns.
In reply to Osterkraut:
They told me that it's not right to drink it out of a Coke glass with a big pink swirly-straw, so I go with tumblers.

Sorry, man. There's no way I start my mornings with scotch, Sunday or any other day. So I don't know what this thread is about. I'm no prude, and I like alcohol, really, but this is concept is rather weird to me. Sorry.
Scotch = A different kind mimosa?

You can't say " we've been drinking all day" if you don't start first thing in the morning.
When I drank in the morning (spring break 1982) there was usually a 3pm nap to get me through the evening.

I know. The new marketing slogan for fine single malt scotch will be. "The Mans Mimosa".

I'll take mine from the next island west. I think I know what I'm doing with my day off tomorrow, aside from shoveling snow.
After a cold day sailing, two good servings of scotch help me to loosen up nicely, the third one sets me just right.
I quit being a snob; I embrace all the brown liquors. Scotch, Bourbon, Rye = all good stuff.
Motto: If it's brown, drink it down.
Tumblers are really nice if you want to put something cold in with the whiskey- but I prefer to not.
Here's what I like
IMHO, when I drink a cold liquid- it deadens flavor receptors in my tongue. Which either means I'm missing some flavors, or I'm trying to mask them intentionally.
So I drink whiskey neat.
Right now, my favorite is generally bourbon. And my favorite is Blantons. There are a LOT of others I like a lot, but that's my go to.
Scotch- I'm still working on it.

A friend of mine with whom I typically enjoy Bourbon and Scotch recently compensated me for some work on her car with a bottle of rum. I still have a preference for Bourbon or an good Islay Scotch, depending on my mood, but I highly recommend exploring "sipping rum". Diplomatico was the first one that I've gotten in to.
In reply to wae:
I like rum a LOT too. We've normally been heavily biased towards Don Q Gran Anejo. But recently tried Ron Zacapa- which is a little sweet, but really smooth.
Like Whiskey- there are a lot of different ways rum is made, Spanish, French, British, and even American. Try a lot to find your favorite. Some are made with molasses, some are made with the raw cane juice, some are made with specific granulated sugar. Then how they are distilled and aged changes the flavors.
It's okay Gary, it's not for everyone but everyone is welcome to join.
In reply to alfadriver: I also tend to prefer it neat (aka "No junk in it!") but it's too gauche to just chug straight from the bottle, so you use what you got, you know?

Ever since I was about 23, I have found that all rums are "regurgitating rums" for me.

Ya I would have to agree.

Noting wrong with a tumbler, but if given a chance to buy a whiskey specific glass, go for it. They are great to sip out of. Much like cognac in a sniffer.
As for rums- you need to find some good ones. Not just clear bacardi.
Mrs. VCH loves a good Dark and Stormy. We make our own variant with home-brewed ginger tea, honey, and seltzer water, with a good dark rum (currently on the shelf is The Kraken) and a bit of lime. But you can be simple and just use ginger beer or ginger ale, rum and lime.
When is round 2 and who is up to join us?
