By the way, Mitchell has official permission to start as many "learn me" threads as needed. He's part of our extended family, and I'm going to bummed that we might not see him at past Challenges.

As far as I'm concerned, I have been a GRM whore. The least I can do is vomit my experience back to the community.

... but maybe "vomit" isn't the best word.

Maybe spew?

So you're saying we can have him start the threads for us then?

:)

Thanks David; I'll miss you guys at future Challenges. I'll keep a couch open, should anyone from GRM need a cheap hotel.

curtis73 wrote: Listen... CA smog tests are about the easiest in the country. Once every two years? You can keep a smog-legal engine in a bag and install it for the test and then swap it out again. I've seen OBD2 monsters belching unburned hydrocarbons for 23 months a LOT in CA. Eastern neighborhoods are sketchy, but great. I lived in Lincoln Heights (2517 Pasadena Avenue at Ave 26) for 6 years. Anything east of that gets sketchy faster than it gets cheaper, know what I mean? Up to the northeast is Highland Park. It is a relatively inexpensive area that is acceptably ghetto. Once you get up as far as Pasadena, most stuff is pretty expensive. There is a nice area of Pasadena here between Lake and Fair Oaks that is cheap (for pasadena) and just a few blocks from the awesome parts of Colorado. You can live two blocks from the Rose Bowl parade for not too much money. The chic, hipster place to live is (hands down) echo park and silver lake. It is expensive, but super cool. This eastern part of Sunset defines silver lake and echo park. If you go down as far as Wilshire, you'll find lots of hookers. But nice hookers Traffic sucks, yes, but its really not that bad once you get used to it. For a while I lived downtown (Pasadena Ave) and worked way out in the valley in Reseda. I also lived in Pasadena when I worked in Hawthorne and Inglewood. As far as eastern parts of town, Burbank, Glendale, Highland Park are good bets. Anything along the San Fernando Blvd corridor or the 110/Figueroa corridor are your best bets.

This is really helpful; thank you. I am at least moderately tolerant of sketchy places. Trulia shows a reasonable amount of 1/1 options in my price range (ideally $1100 or less, though I suppose that more is possible).

I'm not too worried about smog. Fresh OEM o2 sensors resolved the occasional CEL that I would see.

I have verified that I will be working just east of the Fashion District, near the intersection of Alameda and E. 7th. Looks like the nearest metro station is just over a mile away.

Well! I'm in LA for a few more days in an effort to find a place to live. A few observations:

  1. Yes, the weather is that great. It's 72 degrees right now! The AC in my hotel is off, and with the window open, it's almost chilly.
  2. Lots of excellent food everywhere.
  3. I'm glad that I'm comfortable living in sketchy places; LA has them in droves in my price range!
  4. Rental units don't have refrigerators? Seriously? I have never seen that anywhere else.
  5. Elevation changes! This is something else that Florida doesn't have!

Wish I had seen this earlier, although I was in a different part of LA.

Went to school at UCLA so I lived in Westwood and then in Santa Monica. LA is expensive and all of the jobs I found payed fairly low considering the cost of living, which is why I ended up moving. But, I still love LA because theres so much to do!

No real idea of good neighborhoods near your work area, but theres plenty of colleges around town. Consider looking close to one for cheapish rent in not quite so scary places. Plus, parties

I would somewhat regularly (like once a week) drive to Olvera St, near union station, to go to Juanitas even though it was an hour drive. Go get some taquitos from there some time...their green sauce is amazing!

So far, I am really liking LA. It is a genuine city, I suppose. Distinct neighborhoods, a healthy amount of grime, good density; I like that. Not to mention, a ton of culture.

Housing near USC is actually really convenient to work, so I will look in that area. As is Little Tokyo, but no way in hell I can afford anywhere near that area.

I will miss Florida's Cuban and Puerto Rican restaurants, but I love the Mexican food that I have had so far. I grew up in Texas, but moved to Florida almost 20 years ago. I have a lot of tamales I need to catch up on. I'll sure miss the guava cheese pastries all over the place, though. And "pork in everything" restaurants (BBQ/southern).

But on the flip side, the visual inspection portion of the smog test means that they can fail you for ANY non-stock part on the engine, no matter what the tailpipe emissions read, if you don't have a CARB sticker for it. The CA smog test went full special, as the FX edit of Tropic Thunder might say.

Despite all attempts to the contrary, NYC is a city not a state, at least so far.

Australia doesn't permit any turns on red, "left or right"

Car culture is strong here... Obscure, exotic, classic, and strange cars at every turn. Just saw a beautiful 510 pass by, in fact. smog laws don't appear to be getting too much in the way. I have seen more Alfas in the last day than in the rest of my life.

And I found a place I really like between koreatown and Filipinotown. Remodeled place built in the 20s, corner unit, exposed brick walls in the main room, and a vent shaft separating my only shared wall.

Car culture is very alive in CA. Especially classic car culture.

The most liberal town I've ever lived in (Fort Bragg, CA) also had the most interesting cars per population of anywhere I'd been. Our neighbor behind us DD'ed a Volvo P1800 shooting brake. Another guy off our street DD'ed a Ford Model A.

Walking around in Koreatown today, I called every building I saw with a now leasing banner. Found a studio in a great location with an assigned, gated underground parking spot for cheaper than any of the other units I saw. Still only 7 miles from work, but with a ton of bars and restaurants just around the corner. Thankfully, it has a full kitchen... Just not much else!
