the flaming lips are on tour this summer, and will be in philly in late next month, my wife and I are big fans of "yoshimi battles the pink robots" and "at war with the mystics". I hear thier live shows are a big deal, has any body here ever sen a recent Lips live show? I hope the tix are under $50 because any more than that and its too much for me.
I saw them in '93, but that probably doesn't help much. I've heard they put on a really good show.
Saw them at the Virgin Festival a few years ago. I watched some of the beginning, went and saw the Chili Peppers (big mistake) and came back for the end. By the end of the show the whole stage was full of flowers, stuffed animals, a shiny sun smiling...it was like a freaking cartoon. I think you'd dig it if you like their music. Everyone who was there to see them were really happy people. How could you be sad with that as the show finale?!
I saw them at Bonaroo back in '03. Show was good then. Nothing like going to a 3-day 90,000 attendance music festival and get paid for it, with full backstage access, even the artist hospitality tent.
This just in: tix are $44 + plus usual BS extra charges. this looks like $50 worth of rock show 2009 tour footage from youtube
Its probably going to take half of the tour revenues just to pay for that screen!
I continually hear that they are one of the live shows to see before you die. My friend has seen them twice, and if you ask him about it, his eyes glaze over, and his speech gradually trails off and starts to drool out of the corner of his mouth...ok not really, but he is fanatical about how good they are live.

They were on Austin City Limits a year or so ago as Beck's backing band, you cna probably find the episode on youtube or something. That was a good hour in and of itself, but I think some of the Lips' antics were included for the cost of admission.

I believe I've got an audio recording of that performance.
