A new video game system has been on my mind lately. Not a big gamer, but especially with winter on the way, Netflix will only get me so far. Anything to keep my mind occupied & beat the seasonal blahs.
My history? Hm Atari 2600 back in the day, then Commodore Vic-20s and C64s, then I went into the Navy in '85 and nothing for years. An Amiga500 my friends talked me into after they had already faded away, and finally an old P100 computer. Finally when the original Xbox came out I took the plunge. Played the hell out of Colin McRae rally games and a little GTA Vice City, mostly with cheat codes and shooting cops and hookers. Ex-SWMBO had a 360 but we barely touched it, although I did buy Dirt3 and a Warhammer40K game for it.
I still have the original Xbox and games. I have the 2-3 games for her 360. My interests mostly surround car games, especially rally games, and I hear there's a new Star Wars Battlefront! Not much on 1rst person shooters, hell I'll probably try to find something with all the old classic coin-op games like Space Invaders #becauseoldman.
They seem about the same price, they both seem to have "special editions". If you were going brand new, nothing invested, which would you choose?

That depends. Hands down, Sony has cornered the media market, and rightfully so. The ps4 is a great media center. It is also crushing the Xbox in sales. But.....
I prefer the Xbox personally. As someone that's owned...all the things (had a c64, currently have......all) I opted for the xbox. I find the user experience to be more fulfilling, and I like the exclusive. Let's face it, it comes down to forza vs gt6. And while I grew up on gran turismo, forza is a better game, imo. Will I own a ps4? Yeah, eventually. But right now I have the xbone and the wiiu so I'm pretty well set.

Maybe I need a PS4.
EDIT: So Forza is worth it for Xbox? Any compatibility with 360 games?
Forza and Forza horizons make xbox the way to go imho. My console history consist of Nintendo, Genesis, PS1, PS2, xbox (modified into a media center) and xbox360 for reference.
Another thing to consider, though it doesn't have anything rally related, is an IRacing subscription. One of the things that I'm going to loathe about console games is dropping $60 for the game and another $30-60 for DLC content as I progress through the game. Also a 1st person shooter series that I recommend checking out if you're not into them is Red Dead Revolver and Red Dead Redemption. I'm sure that they can each be found for $5-$10 by now, great storyline and highly enjoyable. Basically it's a spaghetti western 1st person shooter done by Rockstar, who makes the GTA games, but without some of the edginess (although I likely the edginess in the GTA games as well).
Also, on Nov. 26 Dell is selling xbox bundle for 299. 6pm est. I might try for two!

There's an update slated for next month that's supposed to allow legacy compatibility for most of the popular 360 titles, but as of the moment, no there's no 360 compatibility.
The list is growing: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/backward-compatibility
I'd get the Xbox 1 just for the new fallout. It looks so good
PS4 is more tech advanced hands down and VR is supposed to be out EOY 16.
Xbox seems to have a some better games and the controler is perfect. (After market can fix but you know)
You have to remember the Xbox One will NOT have better graphics than the Xbox 360 for the same games. Microsoft admitted to making it more media center than pure gaming station. Although the update has helped.
Project Cars, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy series all are great PS4 games.
Forsa, Halo, and Fallout are great for xbox.
PS4 is NOT backwards compatible but previous titles have been adapted for online download.
XBox has some backwards compatiblity.
The best answer is buy both. If you have to pick one for the foreseeable future. PS4 gets my vote.
PS4 (left) X1 (right) Notice the water.

Something worth noting is that the PS3 is still a great console, and there is a pretty big group here that regularly races online with GT6.
I have a 360, just for the Forza franchise. I haven't bought on the current generation yet, but that is mostly due to time.
The only game I've played recently was Bro Force (PC, available on Steam) and I had a blast. My "gaming PC" isn't a powerhouse at all, so I am pretty limited on what I can play before needing to spend the big bucks on a video card.

Backwards compatibility isn't that big of a deal. I know I bought Dirt3, Warhammer40k and for some reason maybe a 3rd game cheap. Not a big investment in games. (Now if I could play my old Colin Mcrae Rally 3 from the old Xbox...)
Halo 5 release is tomorrow, and SWMBO is going on a 5 day vacation with her best girl friend on Wed. I will have plenty of Covenant and Promethean killing time.
Xbox is the answer for a Halo fanboy like me.
I am in the Sony camp with one exception, Forza. I am hoping to get a PS4 during the holidays but there will be an Xbox 1 in the house at some point.

Compare Forza Horizon 2 on 360 vs XB1. I think the developers intentionally stripped features and made the 360 version look like E36 M3. I am still ticked I paid $60 on launch day for the 360 version of the game. It's not even worth $20. FH1 was far superior in every aspect on 360.
I will say this, X1 has alot more peripheral choices when it comes to wheels and the such.

Hm, I have a feeling a wheel might be relevant to my interest.

Both Logitech G25/G27 and Fanatec wheels should work on the PS4.
In reply to Jerry:
There are great wheels for the PS4, there are just more choices on the Xbox 1.
Kind of like going to a Mazda dealership vs a Toyota dealership.
If you want a large car lineup, you go to the Toyota Dealership. If you want the Answer, you go to Mazda.
I have ps4, I only play a few games. But, I love it. It's my media center so I use it for Netflix, nfl sunday ticket, watch fights, play games, etc. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
PS4 myself. To me the only advantage with an X-bone is forza, no GT 7 yet. I think at this point, the best racing game on the ps4 is Project Cars.
Lastly, Microsoft is evil and I hope to never give that company another penny.
Can't go wrong with either one, but most of my friends play xbox so I got the xbone. Plus forza is so much better than GT6.

I'm getting that impression. From my cheesy research so far everything looks pretty damn even. $, quality, games. I've been exposed to Xbox once but definitely not a fan-boi.
I was curious if there was any slant one way or the other as far as car and star Wars games, my big two. I forgot I did really enjoy Neverwinter Nights on a PC, really well-done D&D type game. Assuming one or both systems have a similar game.
Almost everything is available on both platforms...
Forza meant XBONE won for me.
