I have a lot of thoughts about that. First is that they should have evacuated way before.
They should have. When we get the final death tally I think we'll be surprised at how many are in their 70's and 80s. It's harder to evacuate when you're maybe losing a couple of your marbles, probably don't get around as well as you used to, possibly don't want to drive as the winds pick up, etc, and have been through X number of hurricanes in the past 60 years and managed just fine thankyouverymuch.
The mental trap that people fall for is that by the time you realize you need to go, it's too late.
I'm about a mile from the barrier islands that bore the brunt of it and holy E36 M3 is it bad.
In reply to CrustyRedXpress :
I hope all those home are empty.
Reinforcing something I realized years ago. Barrier islands are temporary.
When my dad was a kid, barrier islands were covered with temporary shacks. Places they would spend the summers keeping cool and fishing. If the shack was still there the following summer they counted themselves lucky and went back to fishing. If not they would rebuild the shack.
Now they are covered with million dollar homes that everyone gets to pay for when they get destroyed.
There used to be a parable about building on sand.
In reply to Toyman! :
As I was looking at the videos of the debris and destruction on Matlache I was thinking about that. Maybe we need to be less concerned about hardening these areas to The Big One and just accept that everything Man makes is, ultimately, temporary.
And when a storm is headed roughly your way, GTFO.

I spent a good amount of time on Google and this site yesterday trying to figure out his name but came empty handed.
I did realize that T25Torx is also south of him and close to where Ian passed through, but he posted recently. Maybe T25 knows him?
I hope the recovery can come quickly- the immediate death toll from Maria in Puerto Rico was not all that bad considering how bad the storm was. But the time of recovery was the cause of a lot of deaths.
I hope a lot for all of you down there.

His first name is Tracy, and I think his last name starts with P, but I can't remember it. Look up the '02-04 challenge results- I can't remember which one we first met him at. He ran an Omni, IIRC.

I have an email address for him so I just sent him a note to let him know his GRM fam is asking about him.

My email bounced back undeliverable
In reply to AngryCorvair (Forum Supporter) :
I PMd him earlier this week, but nothing.
I also tried all three of the last names on this car and came up empty:
In reply to Slippery :
That's Barry Miles, Cliff Sebring, and Bill Cuttitta in Team Mini-Me.
An old post mentions he had his GLH in the $2004 Challenge
Tracy's Last Name does indeed begin with a "P"
I have a *correct* last name and a phone number that may or may not be current.
Contact me on t3h googlemails with the same name as my IG handle that has "cars" in it if you want to give this info a try.

Tropea-Suddard household update since it looks like Tom has been too busy to post here. We lost power pretty early on in the storm because one of our oak trees went down on our power line and internet cable. Missed our house, but hit our neighbor's pretty bad. Spent Thursday afternoon once the wind died down clearing our immediate neighbors' driveways of downed trees so that they could come and go as needed.
We've spent most of our time since then cleaning up the rest of the debris and checking on friends and family. We know folks with flooded houses and folks with balled-up roofs. We are very fortunate to only have a little water damage. My parents who live on a barrier island were remarkably unharmed compared to their neighbors and even got their power back last night. Chris is now the proud owner of a backyard swamp, complete with tadpoles.
We probably won't have power or internet until sometime in the next week, maybe longer. We have a generator to run fans and lights and hopefully keep the contents of the freezer edible for when the day comes that we have enough power to cook them again.
Oh, and we used the Element to remove an oak stump yesterday. That was cool.
In reply to Nicole Suddard :
Do houses in that area have basements or are they built on slabs?

I don't know that I've ever seen any Florida house with a basement. Maybe something old and on a hill like Chinesgut or the Governor's Mansion
