After starting working at a young age and being layoff/fired from several jobs, I started feeling like it wasn't worth it apply for jobs, especially work that I'm skilled in. Going self-employed was the way that worked overall for me. I do work for someone else from time to time like Contract work.

Cover letters: yes.
To some, the content of the cover letter is proof that you read and understood the job description, and aren't just spamming your resume out everywhere. Its biggest job is to explain clearly how you are a good fit for those requirements.
Clearly you're getting some traction whatever you're doing, but I know that's been a big deal with some hiring managers I've known.
I'm an idiot. Edit in bold so it actually makes sense.
After yupididit's post about how awesome this board it, I realized I needed to make an update. I'm on the opposite end now with three job offers on the table and a potential other job this week. I don't know if it was venting to the forum and getting out my frustration, modifying my resume or just hitting the search in a different way, but I never expected to have three offers. I've declined one (it was contract) and it made me feel really uncomfortable to do so. I've accepted one of the offers, but the other one came back and matched. So, I've been thinking about it this weekend. Probably won't change, but it's sure nice to have options.
My start date is Oct. 28th, insurance kicks in November 1st and is so much cheaper than my old job, the difference almost makes my house payment.
I'm crazy lucky and thank y'all for giving me the much needed kudos. I KNOW it was a big influence on getting me in the spot I'm in now.

I've been where you are now only it lasted for over 7 years.
The good news is the economy is strong. Unemployment is really low. So you should have very good chance of getting a decent job.
Take your unemployment without a hint of remorse. You've been paying for it for a long time, it's Insurance not charity.
If it runs out, or a few weeks before it does, go get your school bus driving license. The company hiring you will teach you and train you Provide the bus for the test. Most are willing to pay while you learn!

It's only about $20 an hour but much better than retail. Part time, but that gives you midday to go on interviews. Typically you'll get about 30+ hours a week but you can get more.
Midday charters where you take students on field trips, activity bus after regular routes, and sports teams. One week I earned close to $1400 with overtime and bonus money. Typical is about 1/2 of that. But I'm a hustler. I'm always asking for extra.
It looks good on a resume. As a temporary position.
Good news Rob. Glad to hear it!

If there's one thing I've learned, life has a weird way of working itself out. Just when you think it can't get any worse, it usually does. HOWEVER- there's always something on the other side of the bridge. It may not be what you expected, wanted, or even thought about, but there's a good chance you needed it. Seems like you got exactly what you needed.
That is awesome news Rob!! Woohoo!!

Glad to hear the good news. Having two offers on the table at once is a good position to be in.
You managed to find something in Austin?
All three offers were in Austin. The one that countered is near the airport, so, basically a slog all the way through Austin to get to. Not that I would have complained about it, but the one I've accepted is about half that distance. I still can't believe it and feel like it's still a bit of a dream. I cried as soon as I got off the phone with the recruiter.
Now, to get caught back up on the bills we've been holding off on and we'll be in good shape come 2020. And, fingers crossed, the son will finish his first semester of college with all A's. He has one B right now, but a 100 in the lab portion and they've only had one quiz.
Still need to get the wife employed to help pull us out of the hole quicker, but now that I have good insurance, she can easily go contract or perm and already has a number of things in the works.
I'm going to treat myself to a vacation (I haven't really had one in about 15 years. Traveling to a karting event was never a vacation.) once we get back in the black and do the VIP tour of Johnson Space Center.

Congratulations. It's nice when it comes together isn't ?
rob_lewis,
Congratulations!
If your son's at UT Austin, may I poach his driving skills for the FSAE-Electric team? We need an "A" driver much more than the combustion car does - even if he prefers to be on the combustion team as a designer and fabricator.
Sincerely,
