That's pretty much the question. Plan to use it for footage at the skate park and at autocross. Probably put mounts on my helmets and skates.

So... find a Hero 3? Hero Session (prices are down to $200)? Pop for the latest and greatest?

I like my hero3black. Shoots 60fps 1080, wifi enabled, etc. Will shoot 4k at 15fps. Id probably just buy the new hotness if i was doing it again, but shiny objects and all.

In my opinion, the most important feature is wifi-- makes it much easier to set up and can provide for integration with something like Harry's Lap Timer.

If you want to do slomo, that might drive you into some of the more upmarket features.

For automotive uses I would go with a Garmin VIRB. Built in GPS and accelerometer, does tracking mapping and can do data with a Bluetooth dongle to the body port

Although it will see some automotive use, I expect it to mostly see use at the skate park. I want to play around with some shots mounted attached to one of my skates. So, compact and lightweight are going to be key features. I'm not too familiar with the VIRB, but it looks a lot bigger than the GoPro.

Also, if you use additional data logging software (for example, Harry's Laptimer), those often support GoPros but not necessarily other cameras.

I have a Hero3 Black and haven't seen any reason to upgrade to a newer one yet.

A forward and rear facing camera makes for great auto footage and I'd imagine would do the same at the skate park.
