I am going to be looking for a set of pliers to keep in my vehicle just for general in case type stuff. I am considering a pair of small Channel locks and also thinking about getting the same type item from Harbor Freight. Should I pay more to get the Channel locks or just get the same for cheaper from Harbor Freight? Keep in mind I already keep a Leatherman. This will be a backup pair.
What type?
I have only ever used the slip joint style on the far right as a last resort. I don't even keep any in my tool boxes. For a "waterpump" style plier for me there is only one choice and that is the Knipex Cobra
I have them in four sizes and multiples of each. Using Channel locks after being used to the Knipex feels like I traveled back in time to the 1940's. Sure the channel locks are tough and cheap but feel so crude. I love the fact that you can never pinch your palm if the tool slips with a Knipex.
Accompany with one of these
and you can tackle an amazing number of repairs.
Perhaps I am an odd mechanic, but aside from messing with plumbing type home repairs, I very very seldom use channel locks. The most frequently used pair I have are monsters that work great for compressing pistons while doing brake jobs. I would think vicegrips would be much more versatile in an emergency repair situation.
IF you can find a set of red handled SAAB pliers... you'll be pretty well covered. SUPERB OEM tool
I think I am leaning towards something that looks like the Knipex Cobras (they are dang pricey though). I'd like to get a single do it all pair.
Pinched off a rusty, leaking rear brake line on an old PU w/ vise grips once. Topped off the MC and was good to drive the 10 miles home. Don't carry them currently but I prolly should.

I like the adjustable crescent for emergency use. Less space than a set of sockets.

Looks like a Knipex Alligator
Yeah, vice grips, a Crescent wrench and a multi-blade screwdriver. Add duct tape and some wire and you've got a lot of stuff covered.
Agreed, no need for all those pliers.
