I've never really liked the term "hero", but I think my favorite guitarist is Johnny Marr.

John Mayer is a pretty solid player. I do agree with whomever said some of his stuff doesn't do him justice. Check out John Mayer Trio.
Mato Nanji from Indigenous. One of the better modern live players I've seen. Very down to earth as well.
Adam Jones from Tool always wrote killer riffs.
George Benson gets a vote from me for being underrated.

She's not a shredder, but check out Mary Spender. Nothing like Joe B though. Her cover of Crossroads is one of my favorites.
Joe Satriani. I listened to Surfing with the Alien in the late 80s in the Navy and ended up buying two different cassettes and then CD eventually. Added pretty much everything else he's done.
Saw him live in 88 I think, tiny venue in Hampton VA. -This- close to the stage, almost got a guitar pick but my friend grabbed me by the collar because 4 large dudes were going to crush me.
Now sure anyone else, Steve Vai maybe.

There are so many fabulous players out there. EVH sure did a lot the reinvent the R&R guitar and given that I was in high school from '82-86, I had "Diver Down", "MCMLXXXIV" and "5150" as part of my HS soundtrack. That is a pretty solid foundation, to say the least. Godspeed Eddie. Thank you for the music and thank you for the memories.

The only female guitar shredder that I really have on my [known] list is Bonnie Raitt, and I always forget about her in these conversations because for some reason I ignore slide guitar - which is unfair to her, because she's not just a slide guitarist.
Now, if we get into other instruments, it is easy for me - Rhonda Vincent, Alison Krauss, Amanda Shires, Molly Tuttle, Katy Shore, Sierra Hull... But some of them are guitar players as well as fiddle/mando. Hell, I think that Tuttle won the IMBA Guitar Player of the Year award, even though I always think of her on Banjo.

Adrian Belew is not only a great guitarist, but also a very underrated musician
+1 for Tom Morello. I grew up listening to Rage Against the Machine then later got into Bruce Springsteen. I saw them both on Bruce's 2014 High Hopes tour, where Tom melted my face off with his sick nasty solo in "Ghost of Tom Joad".
As far as the ladies go I adore Poison Ivy and I think "Man? or Astroman" hit their peak when Avonna Nova joined.
Forgot a soft spot for Jimi Hendrix. Us left-hander's have to stick together.
