Growing up, Jonathan Winters was one of my favorites. I hear even his friends said he was wierd. It appears he was married for 61 years. My best friend in high school , who was funny in his own right, patterned much of his stuff after Mr. Winters.
I have read that apparently he was a little bit bonkers, as in not entirely mentally stable, when they were filming It's a mad mad mad mad world.
Lennie Pike: Everybody pays taxes!- Even businessmen, who rob and cheat and steal from people everyday, even they have to pay taxes!
Benjy Benjamin: Look! We've figured it seventeen different ways, and every time we figured it, it was no good, because no matter how we figured it, somebody don't like the way we figured it! So now, there's only one way to figure it. And that is, every man, including the old bag, for himself!
Ding Bell: So good luck, and may the best man win!
Benjy Benjamin: [to Mrs. Marcus] Right! Except you, lady. May you just drop dead!
Lennie Pike: All right, all right, we all agree on that. Now look, let's be sensible about this thing. There's money in this for all of us. Right? There's enough for you, there's enough for you, and for me, and for you, and there's enough for... [they all race to their cars]
During filming of the infamous "gas station" destruction, Jonathan Winters was accidentally left on stage and completely bound in thick tape. Hours later, when the cast returned from lunch, they found that he had not even been able to free his arms from the chair. In retaliation, Winters gave a three-hour lecture to Arnold Stang and Marvin Kaplan on forced potty training.
I used to watch his TV show. Live, I think. Had to be early 70's. His bits wandering around all the props and ad-libbing were his best stuff, in my opinion.
"... Yup...."
Although him as Mork and Mindy's child was a bit weird, it was great to see he and Robin Williams work together. I guess Williams really looked up to Winters.
Funny guy. RIP
