I think the Phillips head screws should use JIS screwdrivers?
Any advice? Are there just 3 sizes for $50?

Numbers 1, 2, and 3 cover pretty much everything. Vessel is the main game in town. You won't regret them. They are very nice.
I'd suggest the Vessel Megadora Impacta ones. They've a built in impact driver. Darn nice to have that.
Yeah the Impacta are great on side cases and, well, anything. I got a set of the standard Vessels a couple years ago and it's all we use anymore. They seem to work better in Phillip's as well and don't cam out as easily.
If you're stuck, I've found that knocking a bit of the point off of a Phillips screwdriver with a grinder lets it seat further down in a JIS screw and remove it very well.
I give a talk to rooms full of people (mostly contractors) on a regular basis. I show them a JIS screw and screwdriver on a powerpoint and ask if anyone can identify it. I have yet to see a single hand go up. But you all have that E36 M3 nailed down.
But do you know how to tell the difference between a JIS and a Phillips screw head just by looking at it? Without resorting to google.
I only use my Philips drivers for pry bars and hole centering anymore. I have the vessel ball grip interchangeable bit driver and it's the only reason I don't have the impacta. It's just so good already. And inexpensive.
$18
edit: this is the one I have. $12
