My friend and I swapped another friend's timing belt after the pensioner failed (mounting point for the spring sheared off) on a 2001 S40 (170k miles). After the new belt was on the car started and idled well at 1000 rpm (with the serpentine belt still removed). Then we re-installed the engine mount and serpentine belt and the engine now will not start.

We are getting a code for the cam sensor and I think a crank sensor code to start (I forget the code off hand, sorry). We trial fitted the crank sensor to no avail and the cam sensor but the car will not start. We are getting spark but the plugs were dirty so we tried new plugs and still no start. My friend had pulled the original plugs and said there was enough fuel that he could light the tips with a lighter, so it appears we are getting fuel.

I saw a post about the CVVT sludging as an issue causing cam codes, can this potentially be causing a crank no start scenario? Any other suggestions on points to check?

thanks Tripp

If it was running then suddenly isn't, I would guess a sensor or connector got damaged, not something long term like sludging.

There's a way to test the crank and cam sensors. I haven't watched this video but give it a shot:

thanks, I was assuming the same but can't see anything knocked loose. Was wondering if something jarred and got jammed from slight sludge

Test the sensors, that way you will know whether the sensors are good or bad. I had some trouble with the camshaft sensor on my 850 and it was easy to test the sensor.

In reply to David S. Wallens:

Thank you. Looks like it was out of time (I am going to blame the broken tensioner). We got it to start by setting the timing marks and now it just jumps time under load.
