I just got back from Kitty Hawk this past week and we are already planning our trip for next year. Does anyone from the area, or who has been there before, have anything they recommend doing or seeing besides the beach?

Jockeys Ridge State Park is worth a visit, bring a kite for some fun
Rent a Jeep or 4x4 and go up to Carova and drive on the beach, look for horses.
Check out the lighthouses, Cape Hatteras is a must.
The Wright Brothers memorial of course.
Check out Manteo.
Check out the elizabethan gardens (and the lost colony performance).
I always enjoyed the aquarium as well (its on Roanoke island).
Seeing the wild horses (as previously mentioned) is really neat to see (need to have a beach / sand capable vehicle).
Looks like there are some interesting things in the area based on Atlas Obscura, but that's just my 2 cents.
Everything mentioned above if great. .We always hang on the beach, surf, boogie board, etc. You can get a permit and drive on the beach at either end of the main parts (Corolla and Rodanthe - Hatteras areas) and it's not a bad day trip to take the ferry across to Ocracoke and back if you have time to burn. I've camped here a good number of times and rented houses all along the whole stretch of outer banks/Ocracoke
We go to the KOA in Rodanthe regularly.
Get down to Hatteras early enough to get an apple ugly. https://orangeblossombakery.com/AboutUs.html
Graveyard of the Atlantic museum, Wright Brothers Memorial, the Aquarium, the lighthouses (Currituck, Bodie and Hatteras) are all must see.

I have heard about the wild horses. That and the garden are on my list now.
In my opinion, the garden is amazing! I'm not into gardens or anything, but what they have done there is incredible.

I love gardens, one of my favorites is Bok Tower Gardens in Florida. It's one of the largest gardens I have ever been to and it has what's called a singing tower. Its smack in the middle of the Gardens and it plays bells that can be heard throughout the property.

This thread is useless without pictures.
Thanks,
Those of us who didn't go to Kitty Hawk?
Don't forget Diggers Dungeon on the way down. You can see Grave Digger and maybe meet Dennis Anderson if you're lucky. There is a a historic farm on Manteo called The Island Farm. The kids liked it when we went. There is also a rum distillery on Manteo called Kill Devil Rum that gives tours. If you have kids, there is a sound side beach behind Jockeys Ridge that has very calm water and stays shallow for a very long way out. There is a sandwich shop called The Country Deli I always go at least once on each trip.
