Corey Krietenstein made a few $2000 Challenge appearances with his 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit, originally a $50 purchase. When we first met Corey, his Rabbit was powered by a 16-valve Scirocco engine, but for our $2003 Challenge, the Rabbit returned sporting a 2.0-liter short block lifted from a 1991 Passat. Corey also added a home-made nitrous system.

The reformulated Rabbit ran down the quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds, only about four-tenths slower than the latest Volkswagen Golf R.
