This is shaping up to be an awesome $2000 Challenge. There are new classes so more people can compete, as well as--for the first time ever--camping right there at the track.

That has me thinking... what else should we do while we're all in Gainesville? Valve cover racing attendance has been declining for years, but we have the space, time and community for something else. I'm not talking about more car racing, I mean stuff like valve cover racing and similar. Stuff the whole family can do while they're at the track.

So, any ideas?

Cycle Karts is the obvious answer:

Would nighttime drone racing be an option? I would not be a participant, but I would be more than entertained to spectate that if allowable.

What are the sound restrictions as they pertain to live music? I have some friends that have expressed an interest in jamming out at the challenge in the past.

Wet t-shirt contest. There are plenty of moobs attached to low inhibitions and zero shame

Combine with sponsors showing off newer crap, like a mini-SEMA.

Chassis dyno, with or without prizes for highest and lowest numbers per engine cylinders.

Pogo stick autox. Heck, do the drags too.

Some kind of "cook-off" competition:

  • Best BBQ
  • Best home made pie
  • Best Walking Taco (or Charity Taco Bar)

Sticker exchange

Model Car build contest, judged by peers

Hot Wheels (or MatchBox) Cars Swap Meet / Show

Maybe even a burn out contest after the dynamic events are over.

I got mad pole skillz. I don't mind working the pole for entertainment.

In reply to Indy - Guy :

You bring up something relevant.  How does food work at the event?  Is GRM paying for people to man the concession stand, or is that part of the contract with the track?

If the former, maybe cancel it to have a food truck rally.  Advertise it with the city, tickets for spectators available at the gate.

Jam session/open mic.

Throw a concert. Works for Gridlife!

I think a good competition would be great.

I'd really like to see the swap meet idea come back strong. Though I admit it is really hard to bring all my parts for sale on top of the challenge car and tools I'm already packing.

I also really really like the cars and coffee idea.

You know what will happen, right? Food truck autox.

R/C car racing. Either a course or drag racing. E and/or Nitro classes.

If a course, you could set it up to be open for a certain part of the day, and run it like the AutoX. Maybe get a local R/C club to host. Give the kids something to run while Mom or Dad are in the big car.

If drags, do a double elimination setup and run it quick between the AutoX and drags.

In order to win dynamic they have to serve a customer before crossing the final light.  Final scores will depend on quality of the meal as well as the time.

RC would be cool. I haven't gotten into it, but it would be a neat, fairly easy addition.

There was a suggestion of a "Rod Toss" a few years ago.

There were several folks that seemed to have rod/piston combos out of broken stuff taking up shelf space.

I think the intent was something like horseshoes, but of course it morphed into distance or something equally silly.

For extra difficulty, you have to toss the rod using the engine it lives inside.

Cornhole, but with metal decks and sets of pistons/connecting rods! You'd have to have a safety zone and the sound would be glorious.
