And everything loosely installed before I packed up for dinner. Will finish everything in the morning.

Only the subframe. Every nut, bolt and mounting plate has been replaced. Suprisingly very cheap for all OE hardware and suspension links from Hyundai. Most expensive pieces were the knuckles which i got aftermarket.
While researching the car and its transmission choices(there are three different 5 speeds between the Tiburon/Elantra models) i found that an LSD is in the realm of possibility using a Mitsubishi Eclipse FWD unit and Misubishi Eclipse FWD speedometer gear.
Going to research more but they seem to fit the 5 speed Hyundai transmissions without issue. If i can find a used one it may be an option to throw an LSD into this thing.
Bob - ever heard of this working? There seems to be alot of chatter on the old Tibby forums that they do work.
Sounds likely. I've never heard it but the trans was a Mitsu redesign. A lot of the parts shared. It uses the mitsu style clutch so it would make sense.
EDIT: I should say an evolution of the mitsu design.

Welp, one OBX unit is on its way along with a speedometer gear. Ill try to find a Tiburon 5 speed to throw the diff in for that lower final drive ratio. Any other things i should think about when cracking the trans case?
Car is ready to go for this weekend if the weather holds out. Doing a trackcross at Summit Point on Shenandoah with GFE. The great part about this event is the dual courses - one side is the race course while the other(through the carousel) is the practice course. I signed up for both, single driver(Mr J is driving his Miata this event). So its going to get a significant amount of track time at this event. See how the brakes and suspension do this time around.
Changes:
big brake kit up front
rear disc conversion
intake
muffler replaced with resonator
16x7 wheels w/ 205/45R16 tires
did my own alignment this time around with a basic angle finder and some string. Left the front alone at -2.0/-1.9 while the rear had some funky readings. I *think* i have it set to -1.0 on both sides but the digital angle finder started acting up on me and not zeroing out. Maybe too much dirt/dust/debris on the bottom of it. Would fluctuate and show positive readings then negative readings back and forth? Either way, when i tried a few different methods it seemed to be -0.8 to -1.0 as the readings.
bobzilla said:What pads did you go with?
Went with EBC yellow stuff for now but im regretting that choice. They fit so poorly i dont know if they are just made wrong or the wrong pad for the caliper bracket.
That was one question i had, did those calipers come off a 5 speed or 6 speed car? There are two different pad numbers for GT cars dependent on transmission and it looks like the pads are centimeters different on the ears. I am going to get a set of Porterfields made for it but need to figure out which pad size i need. The EBC's will be used for now but i doubt they are going to last knowing how much i had to shave off the pad ears just to get them to slide smoothly in the caliper bracket.
The last set of Tibby calipers i had were from the SE so it was one single pad part number for the performance pads i ran(even though they were impossible to find).
Those were off a 6-spd car. I had yellows on my Swift and I didn't like them either. They also fit really really snug and I had to file down the edges. The Hawks I use now, the rears are a little snug but just barely.
OBX LSD showed up. Looks to be in good shape for a China copy that has been sitting on a shelf for years.
also brake ducts will be made this week. Went 2.5" for some room around the control arms.
Replaced the pads all around. Couldnt take the dragging from the EBCs. Grabbed some Powerstop Z23 pads from Rock Auto and the fitment is worlds better.
Removed the the rest of the broken parking brake. The lines were broken and rusted to death.
Also rebled the brake system to see if the pedal feel was maybe air in the lines and it definitely feels better.
Ready for Sunday at Trackcross(going to be raining)
Car did excellent. Absolutely mind blowing how well the brakes did along with the slight suspension changes/alignment. ZERO rub anywhere, including 50+ mph entering the Carousel turn on Shenandoah Circuit( which i nearly E36 M3 my pants on due to going WAY too hot into). Intake, exhaust helped tremendously with knowing what rpm the car was at during cornering.
Grip, well, it was raining extremely hard. Traction was nearly zero in first and second gear. Top of second and third were the go-to spots to keep the car from spinning the inside wheel. RS-Pro's held up well with the massive amounts of standing water on track.
And it was wet....very, very, very, very, very wet. We did the morning timed course runs(4 total) on Turns 4-9 on Main circuit and then practice runs(non-stop!) on Shenny going from Big Bend through Carousel and finish at the Bus Stop.
Morning runs only i placed 45/81 which is acceptable to me. Raw time was 38.324 which was 4.628 seconds off FTD for morning runs. Not bad considering the FTD car was a 600+hp RS3 on 295's and second place was Sam Strano in a Corvette. We ended up leaving after lunch due to the standing water in the car and drivers seat. Just so much rain to deal with and i already felt kinda sick from the constant 40F temps plus rain on top of it all.
The car was on par with some Fiesta ST's, a few M3's, an S6 and other impressive machinery. I think in the dry, when im not cold, wet and tired the car could easily gone well higher in the standings and a bit more "balls to the wall".
I only got a few pictures of it standing still but there was a guy taking photos. Hopefully he posts them up since i know he got a few of the Elantra on track.
One gripe for the whole day - broke off the passenger side wiper arm. During one practice run the wind + rain decided to somehow loosen the nut holding the arm down. This lead into both wipers getting stuck together MID RUN and making it a bit of a code brown moment. Nut wouldnt budge so we snapped it off....which means we now need to source a wiper transmission. Oh well, we kept having fun so it was worth it.
It has to be an optical illusion but it looks like positive camber in the rear still. OTherwise, looks awesome and glad to hear it doesn't suck!

Im like 50% positive its fine(my alignment skills are up there with fine chef cooking) but it felt good and back end felt planted. Ill check again and report back. If it still reads -1.0 then ill probably have Motorsports Solutions re-align it when they do the dash bar and seat back brace.
Mind you the fronts are set to -2.5 so it may be an optical illusion knowing the fronts are cambered to the moon.

I think it's fine, I rememver the rear body line makes some weird optical illusions as well.
One for the blooper reel.....

Ordered a new wiper motor, transmission and two wiper arms. Cheap enough for the aftermarket stuff that all (4) pieces were cheaper total than the two large parts straight from Hyundai.
Trackcross yesterday at Summit Point on Shenandoah. Placed 43/92 morning and 61/92 in the afternoon.
The morning course was much smaller and the low hp cars had some advantage but in the afternoon the straight sections meant anything with power was just that much faster. Gearing also didnt help as the car was either too low in 3rd gear or too high in 2nd.
Super fun and the car did great. Brakes felt a little weird mid way through the day so were going to have to check them out. Transmission had some clunky shifting also which concerned me. Felt like it didnt want to go into gear when hot without a little "crunch".
I have some time to check things out since my next event isnt until July. So ill rebleed the brakes and transmission and see if that helps.
Crunching when hot is likely due to not enough clutch release.
Been there done that. A ziptie should be able to fit in between the clutch disc when clutch pedal is depressed cold.
I drilled a hole with a hole saw in my bell housing to be able to check after having similar issues in my racecar.
Edit: I could spin the driveshaft by hand when clutch was pressed thinking that was good enough. It was not. Notchy shifting and a couple ruined synchros really smashed the point home.
