Show images of destroyed wheels that have no baring on my thread is merely detracting from the thread and mislead others who may read it. if you have something to say (constructively) then do so, others wise go take your rude comments to the Off topic area.

Note that the picture of the destroyed wheel was posted after the thread nuking, but the post constructively explaining why some people say it's a bad idea to powdercoat wheels seems to be the reason it was nuked. Something to consider when you're making requests.

Criticism is not always negative, posting proof of weakened powder coated wheels is more than warranted when it comes to safety

Well crap, I sent a set of Porsche OE 17's in for powerdercoating. Is this a bad idea to use on the street?

In reply to Javelin :

If you're not pushing their limits, it's probably fine. Street use doesn't see a lot of high load lateral loading but it will see more potholes. The place where you really have to watch out is for race wheels that are optimized for super light weight and don't have a lot of spare margin.

The wheels on my Vanagon were powdercoated by the PO before I bought them too. I wouldn't have done it myself and I wasn't thrilled about it, but given their use case I'm okay with it.

They are actual OE wheels (not knock offs) and were going to be my street/AX wheels on the 944 S2. I'm nervous about them now.

I think firstly you need to understand that comments of dissenting opinion do not mean we are chastising you or think you're beneath us. Yes, there is a large grouping of highly talented fabricators on this forum but I think I can say with certainty that none of them will look down on you for attempting to modify your vehicle to replicate your vision. Aside from some good natured ribbing, everything will be with the intent to prevent failure in cases where we've done something already/seen something done already and succeeded in a certain manner (which you can take the advice or not take the advice, it's totally up to you). But the fact that we point out factual inaccuracies or correct slightly off assumptions, isn't meant to be an attack at you. We're here to grow, have fun and share our selves and our projects. I presume you are too?

Hey just a friendly piece of advice, deleting your threads all the time and calling comments gibberish sure aren't going to do much to drive people to check out your build. We're all here to learn and share, and sometimes other things are learned by proxy.

A non-gibberish suggestion:

You're basing your load estimates on an empty Transit vs an empty T-bird. Keep in mind that the 200 lb weight difference might disappear quickly if you start loading in extra toys like a big bangin' amplifier setup, and depending on the year of the T-bird it may only be expecting 2 passengers when you could easily carry more. Something to keep an eye on, I'd hate to see a balled up transit with nice upholstery.

Also, as you probably know, passenger car tires being used on a cargo van need to be de-rated by 9% - I have to pay attention to this for my Vanagon. I don't know if that also applies to wheels, but it would be worth checking with your contacts.

That's some good gibberish. I need to read through the whole thing, but it does seem to indicate that yes, they can overage but no, it doesn't seem to be a significant problem in their samples. Interesting that it looks as if their 6061 sample wasn't properly treated when they got it and it effectively got corrected by the powdercoat process.

1) I clicked on odd title, out of curiosity

2) first post I see, seems unrelated. Then I see it's not the op. Weird.
3) I continue reading, wondering what is going on, again, out of curiosity.
4) I see Mr Asa's well written response. I then see, by his next post, the op has responded negatively, and I figure out YOU are deleting everything you write. And apparently, not only doing something very weird, but being a jerk, as well.
On off topic threads, I've ruffled a few feathers, and not always been nice... but those same folks , on a tech thread, have been nothing but awesome!
No one insulted you, I assure you.
Great folks on here.

Nice to see the thread is continuing on its own without my comments. Because Tom suggested that I continue my topics in the readers rides, I've now very happy he told me this. So I've continued my topics within my profile/readers rides without interruption. Plus I asked that this thread be deleted as it will continue to aimlessly drift towards topics no one has any control over. Nice to see that a build tread can turn into a off topic thread.. Hopefully Tom or an admin will delete the thread as I've requested, then you all can return to your normal posting in other topics.

Good thing the forum boss is here to direct the conversation on a thread he started but then abandoned but didn't manage to actually delete. This ceased to become a build thread the moment the actual build posts were removed, and somehow people kept talking about the actual original posts and adding actual information against the OP's will.

I guess if we were still on topic we'd be talking about how perfectly the powdercoat matches the paint sample that was never shown to us. Or we wouldn't, because talking about posts in a build thread is off topic.

I'll be looking to see if there's a single post in the build diary where something actually goes right. From what I recall, every single post about this vehicle has ended with "and that was all wrong, so now we're waiting for the correct part from (insert name of implied sponsor here)". After a while, you've gotta look at the one thing all these problems have in common. And then you have to think about how this one common thing  gets all wound up anytime someone does something other than offer the forum equivalent of a participation award.

Here's the communication with "Discount Tire Corporate" that was referenced earlier, if anyone's interested in more details on wheel fitment and the wheel in question along with a non-nuked version of the narrative.

Couldn't he just put some larger hubcaps that look like custom wheels over the smaller tires? wink

This is also a great place to comment on your forthcoming garage posts.
