I'm putting a 20v blacktop 4-2-1 header on my 4AGE but can't find the gasket that goes between the upper and lower sections anywhere, now I have to consider settling for some gasket maker goop. Has anyone used this and how did it work? Any recommendations?

Copper RTV here... still holding together my warped cast iron manifold leak free on my 3.9 Dakota after 15k miles.....

I've used the copper stuff along with a mess up gasket before. It works well, but I don't think it can fill much of a void. Anyone every try to use it with a larger void to fill?

+1 on the RTV. I've seen it used on top professionally prepared cars with great success.

This would be used to replace a paper gasket so I don't think there's much void to fill.

I have only used this for exhausts, and it seems pretty rubbery, but it does seem to fill space reasonably well. I don't think it's officially rated for as high a temperature as some of the copper stuff is though:

The Right Stuff (works great for sealing my headlights too):

The least durable RTV type goop I have ever used was from Harbor Freight (I think it was red). It was really cheap, but didn't hold up very well in my particular application (exhaust again, could have just been heat-related failure and trying to use it for outside of it's intended temperature range). Copper Permatex was what I used before I got hooked on the Right Stuff.

the 240sx's used to be notorious for not sealing downpipes and a lot of the guys used this stuff that came in a tube called 'stovepipe sealant' or something. I had some at one point in time, it came out pretty thick and it could actually fill a decent gap. Once it dried it became hard and over time, brittle. I hit the downpipe on a speedbump or something and it crumbled and my leak came back. I then used ultra high temp RTV on both sides of an aftarmarket gasket. It never sealed quite as well as the stove pipe stuff but it lasted until I took it apart a year or two later.

Hmmm, anyone remember seeing one of those 'craft cutter' machines on TV infomercials?
You can hook up a computer and it will cut shapes in flat stock.
ISTR that it could handle pretty thick pieces of cardboard.
Maybe it could do pieces of roll gasket?
(or even thin copper?)
Might be nice to be able to make gaskets on demand.

For example, put thermostat housing on scanner bed, trim it up with 'Paint' or somesuch, then cut out a new one to match.

Just thinkin' out loud here ....

There used to be product called Gun Gum, for patching up mufflers and tailpipe leaks.

Good idea, I think we can get that stuff here.

Are you talking about the 2 donuts that fit between the header and the down pipe??

90917‑06061- about $10 per... you'll need 2

they have several different "flavors" of The Right Stuff these days.. i think one of those flavors is a high temp copper..
