And our idea was for something that was blue. No, seriously, we discussed a few ideas--some retro, some not so retro.

Tim, if part of that comment is at my post my real design looks nothing like that. I just posted it in hopes to inspire someone. Im certainly keeping my real submission under wraps for sure:)

I too was a bit shocked at some of the comments I saw. Regardless of who wins this is a wonderful opportunity for us to throw our design ideas. many of us who may never get a chance like this otherwise SO BE APPRECIATIVE PEOPLE. Nobody is forcing us to enter.

Thank you for answering my question about the glass. I was heading that direction because I knew the one donor car thing would be ideal but i just wanted to put it out there.

thanks again.

Those who read our magazine know where my head is. Dave Smith and I are of a mind. If you can't build this thing for $15,000 in your garage, than this project is a fail, no matter how cool it looks. This concept needs to be deeply felt and considered when trying to design the way it looks and goes together.

I found this schematic of a 2003 Boxster, which should be provide a reasonable approximation, or at least a decent starting point.

Hope it helps.

Guys- Dave Smith has agreed to provide drive train outline and seating position on the templates. This will help us with making our designs suitable. He doesn't want to get any more specific than that as he wants to see all ideas. For the right design they would change other things, such as the radiator. Right now they plan to use the Subie radiator because it saves cost and is matched to the engine. However, if someone comes up with a killer twin side radiator design, they might change. You get the idea. Get creative!

I will be building a idol to this concept and worshiping at its altar.

Of course, that idol will be made out of clay and will be my entry into the contest.

I'm making plans to build this kit the moment it comes out. Lighter than my Miata, more power, built with my own two hands, and able to chew up and spit out on the expensive Italian jewelry that shows up at Lime Rock? You bet I'm in!

1800 lbs and single donor mandate.

Subie engine transaxle guess is 425 lbs all dressed Unsprung weight guess 225lbs for all 4 corners Gonna guess 225 lbs for the bare frame wires rad lights seats exhaust battery wipers windshield Thinking that lot will work out to 250lbs

So that leaves you an envelope of approximately 750 lbs to finish the project

For reference, a factory five shell shell with doors trunk and bonnet is in the range of 150 lbs (that surprised me)

So this leaves 600 lbs to flesh out the car with weather, comfort and safety matters.

This tell me that the car will need be rudimentary. I am thinking a scaled lotus Elan coupe or some such. More elaborate bodies are going to eat up the weight budget rather quickly.

I can hardly wait to see what comes of this project

I probably won't submit anything, as I can't get far enough along on my turbo Miata fast enough to take a break and make some awesome t-shirts, so here are some suggestions I hope will be taken to heart by those who do.

Remember the MR2 Spyder weighs, what, 800 lb less than the Boxster? Slightly longer wheelbase and eight inches shorter overall. Magic handling with a good setup, goes sideways for days and perfectly controllable. Launches like a mofo with an open diff.

Also, don't forget to stick with standard/universal/common/popular tire sizes, so everyone will have a range of choices. For the record, I hate the idea of 18s inside a 23-in. tire. No sidewall, very limited tire selection. Tires make the car good. You don't win by getting rid of them completely. That's 205/50-15 or 225/45-15 OD, but I'm not aware of good 15-in. wheels with 5x100 PCD. If larger wheels are required for brakes, or just to fit the hubs well, then 17s inside 25-in. tires is the way to go. You couldn't go wrong with 225/45-17 front on 17x8.5 and 255/40-17 rear on 17x9.5 or even 17x10. I haven't done any research on it yet, but planning your design around wheels that are readily available and fit Subaru hubs probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

Just spent some time over at Tire Rack. Looks like 17x7 to 17x8 is available for WRX. 205/50-17 front and 225/45-17 rear, or maybe square if the weight ends up close to 50-50 on this thing, would be a really good combination. Could always roll around on stock 16s for a little while.

It seems that some are overly concerned about the minutiae of the design. F5 has designers that will get the gist.

I have a one off design that was completed over a year ago that fits the description. My computer skills are so bad that I'll be sending it through email.

Hasbro, please read the rules. All submissions need to be in .pdf or .jpg form. We need to be able to email entrants to all the judges, who are spread around the country. If you draw it, just get someone to scan and email it for you.

I would also like to find some WRX radiator dimensions if anyone knows them off hand. I know we dont have to use it but since im working in 3d i like to make representations of this stuff to flush out some shapes.

This is all I could find.

"Third Generation Specification:Core size approx : 13.4"27.1"1.65"Overall size approx :17.0"18.1"2.16"Inlet approx :1.54"39mmOutlet approx :1.54"39mmRow :2Include Core and Tank:All Aluminum.100% Brand New in Box.High Performance and Doubled Cooling Capacity.1 Year Warranty Against Manufacturing Defect. This Radiator has Heavy Thickness ; 2-Rows 42 mm Core-"

It would be nice to have some confirmation if thats right or close.

Thanks

Nice to see the Factory Five contest moving in the right direction. This is a rare opportunity: A car manufacturer asking you to design their next product. ...And for cash as well as glory.

Throughout this process, I expect we'll all learn more details about a great new component car. The GRM community as a whole--not just the winner--could help influence the final product. Will it be a low slung speedster? ...or an outlaw mid-engine rally-style sedan. Last night, for example, I googled "Abarth". I was rewarded with some out of the box inspiration including an old school Abarth / Porsche collaboration.

This was the original design direction of the Smyth G3F. I love the look of this car. Unfortunately, the G3F has drifted away from this a fair amount.

I wonder if FF could be convinced to include a token rear seat configuration. A much cheaper, much better looking Lotus Evora with Subie power would be fantastic!

Couple of images that will hopefully be helpful. Italo has already mentioned the Saker (is it me or does it look like the 80's IMSA Group 44 Jags?), which also uses Scooby power - shown here with rear with panel removed: Free Photo Sharing by ThumbSnap (courtesy of Saker build thread on Pistonheads)

Fuel tank located ahead of engine, hard up against firewall. Of course we not constrained to adopt same solution but Saker's wheelbase about 6" longer than FFR wheelbase (listed as 2565mm, ~101" ), so even with an alternative solution gonna be a proper cab forward roadster...
