What if GM took over Chrysler, then killed it off? Made the Viper a boutique brand and 86ed the rest? Some Chrysler fans would be mad, but they would come around. Then, the only American competition for GM would be Ford.

chrysler has some nice looking vehicles. GM has been making some major strides in build quality so combining the 2 may make some sense.
Though I doubt it will ever happen.
The strange thing about competition is that, usually, competitors don't want to kill each other off. Competition breeds innovation, so consumers don't want it either. I doubt Chrysler will be shut down.
If it does happen, it might be similar to what BMW did with Land Rover. Get the company, harvest its technology, and then sell off the heap of crap to some unlucky S.O.B. and make him deal with its problems.
As much as I hate to say it, I don't see Chrysler survivng another 10 years. I'd rather see GM pick up their usable assets if it will improve their survival rate long-term.
It now sounds like Nissan-Renault might by Chrysler's next suitor. Does anyone want to place odds on the final outcome? Either way, I hate to see American nameplates disappear. Discuss.
i would like to see Nissan, well, atempt to "save" chrysler... rebadge a sentra as a 3rg gen neon... it would be the most reliable
What ever happened to stroking tata for some growth?
I read here ( http://www.autoblog.com/2008/10/22/nissan-makes-offer-for-20-of-chrysler/) that if Nissan/Renault took over Chrysler that the Chrysler brand names would have a chance of surviving, while GM simply wants the newer facilites and would dump the Chrysler brands.
Also accoring to the same blog site, Chrysler may also be in talks with Tata and Fiat.

Yes, it would be hard to imagine a Viper with an aircooled flat six in the back.
Seems to me that for GM to add MORE money-losing capacity to acquire $11 Billion in assetts makes about zero sense.
As I posted in another thread, I think Fiat should buy Chrysler. The product lines don't overlap and Fiat could use the North American dealer network.
I'd love to see a Hemi Alfa Romeo sedan.

I'm still mourning the loss of Oldsmobile. No possibility of a new 4-4-2 now. I would hate to see Chrysler disappear because they were just small enough to make some quirky cars. Not that I would buy any of them, but they were interesting. Hmmmm. Maybe that's the problem......

Yeah, because the last one was so awesome.

Somehow I blocked this one out of my mind. Now it all comes back to me like a greasy pork chop dinner. I have to go lie down.
Cerberus just wants to ditch Chrysler before it loses any more money and the market for its cars gets any worse and trade for GMAC so they can loot it and use the money to buy other corporations in this devalued market with chances for survival that are better than that of Chrysler.
The fact that GM might actually choke trying to eat up Chrysler because both companies make similar products and have similar problems (I am thinking the death of British Leyland here.) and neither company is the solution for the other companies weaknesses, does not concern Cerberus at all, nor do the mass layoffs to come from the failure of both companies.
This is the kind of short term Wall Street thinking that is destroying our economy on a long term basis.
And if that isn't bad enough, they want 10 billion from the taxpayers to help grease the deal.

Dodge is going to build trucks for Nissan and they are going to build small cars for Dodge. According to reports. and there is Cherry.
Aaaaaaaaannnnddddd.... they want the gubmint to take over $3 billion in pension obligations. On top of the Social Security idiocy.
Man, this is getting stoopider by the minute.
What does GM + Chrysler + Ford equal?
AMC - American Motors Corporation !
On the serious side, being one of the GM guys on this board, I would hate to see the merger. I think competition among the U.S. automakers is still key. I too, was sad to see the Olds brand disappear. GM used to sell a ton of Olds Cutlass' (did I mention I bought a 76 Cutlass for the 09 Challenge?). When the Cutlass went front wheel drive and the Calais was built for the older crowd-sales died.
The 09 Ram has a Hemi putting out 390 hp I believe? The Dodge Challenger is a true musclecar. What else does Dodge build now that sells? They already cut back models. Plymouth is missed. When we need new Neons for gas mileage they are no longer built.
So, let's say they merge. And bad management, marketing, and the UAW screw things up again, and they can't pay back the 10 mil and still need help.
Its just a temporary fix to a problem that needs a bigger and better solution.
The U.S. automakers need to hire more CAR PEOPLE

if that is the case, I hope they revive the neon name plate. And I will buy one.
Although I was raised in a "GM family" (that never bought another GM car after the bastards dropped the Corvair), I cringe at the idea of Jeeps with traditional GM quality control. The only American car I've bought since 1968 is my current Jeep, and so far (2 years of heavy use, at least 15 miles/day of washboard dirt, 150 inches of snow yearly average) I'm actually impressed with the build quality. It needed a lift kit to get decent ground clearance, but that's true of many small SUVs these days, and the lift solved the problem nicely.
A GM Jeep? Shudder.

Oh, that never happens. Everyone knows corporations never want to pawn things off on the government, they want to retain capitalist values and do it all themselves. No US corporation ever does anything like this.
Obviously, it's the US government, with Obama undoubtably leading the charge, that is forcing a corporation to lose control of its pension program.
What would either manufacturer gain? I see how they could take advantage of economies of scale. That would entail massive layoffs to ensure cost savings. I wonder if the UAW would allow that to happen in time to save the siamese twins created.
What does Chrysler have that GM would want? Short of putting a tombstone on top of a domestic competitor....
I mentioned this on the other thread but now that I have thought about it more Volkswagen needs to buy Chrysler.
What would that get VW?
1: Dealers - lots of them all over the country, most of them have just been renovated.
2: A REAL truck line with established approved diesels
3: A halo sports car
4: Instant #2 behind Toyota which is what they want.
5: North American assembly presence with German funding. "Cheap labor" compared to Europe.
What Chrysler gets:
1: Job security
2: Revenge on Mercedes
It would not be easy:
Current products:
KEEP Jetta, gli, sportwagen (30-40mpg small sedan/wagon)
KILL Passat, wagon
KEEP CC (make it the Passat, add a diesel then run it from 22k base to 42K AWD near luxury sedan)
KEEP Beetle, Beetle convertible (Add diesel for 40mpg)
KEEP Rabbit, gti, r32
KILL EOS (I love the car but it is too fickle)
KILL Routan (Keep one "Minivan" the Caravan)
KEEP Tiguan (add diesel)
KILL Touareg
KEEP PTCruiser (Build next generation off Jetta platform, add diesel keep design similar)
KILL Sebring sedan, convertible
KEEP 300 (Make it LUXURY with a manual trans and diesel options)
KILL Town & country (Keep one "Minivan" the Caravan)
KILL Aspen, hybrid
KILL Avenger
(Can I double KILL?) KILL Caliber
KEEP Challenger (next generation reduces girth and adds Audi sourced quad cam V8 from RS model)
KEEP Charger (tool up primarily as low option/cop model "State sedan" as well as a mid option low lux model for families)
KEEP Grand caravan
KILL Journey
KEEP Viper
KEEP Dakota (add VW TDI diesel)
KILL Durango
KILL Nitro
KEEP Ram pickup, chassis cab (Simplify, Make a LD and a HD option. The Ram LD is the 1500 package the Ram HD is the 3500 dually package.
KEEP Sprinter (Get more on the ground as delivery trucks, sell with business incentive rebate)
KILL Commander
KILL Compass
KEEP Grand Cherokee (name only but build off Audi Q7/Touareg/Cayenne platform build a clean 6 diesel for all)
KILL Liberty
KILL Patriot
KEEP Wrangler, unlimited (Add VW TDI)
EXPLOIT GEM for city cars
EXPAND ENVI into VW lines.
Now here is the trick, this leaves VW/Chrysler with 16 models. Sell them all in a single dealer setting. Premium markets get Audi dealerships as well.
a very well done list, but what about QC, as most of what I have heard of late model VW quality, reliability, ect. is not that great, but OTOH i have not dealt with any, and this is just the consensus i have picked up from the board

Dude, are you on dope? The Cummins is the diesel engine that get's respect. The Isuzu-Max is good, but not as good as the Cummins. I'm not talking about the manfacturers ratings, I'm talkinging about what diesel owners buy diesels for. Torque and life expectancy. The Durocrap has torque but will NEVER regularly go 1/2 a million miles without needing any work other than maintenance. You can't possibly think the Cummins is the inferior engine can you?
