I'm pretty ecstatic right now.
535i with a 5 speed
limited slip option
e34 wheels
supposedly bilstein HD struts
issues:
ABS engages when there is no wheel slip
the clutch pedal is too close to the floor (he just replaced clutch master/slave. bleed it?)
the valve cover gasket is seeping oil
the rear driver's side window regulator is a little grindy
some bulbs need to be replaced
other random things
purchased below the $1300 asking price
Those problems are terminal. I can't believe you are that big a sucker that you paid more than $100 for it. I see you are in ME. You can limp it over to me in MI and I'll take if off your hands for twice the $100 value. I'll even pay for 1/2 your Greyhound ticket back home.
SWEET! If the ABS is like similar vintage Mercedes, the chopper under the sensors on the hubs might just need a good scrubbing.
Yes, the clutch hydraulics likely just need bleeding.
Nice snag! Congrats!
Nice E28 man!
On the abs, its probably the sensor or a broken tooth or hopefully just a bunch of gunk.
On the clutch, remove resevoir cap, unbolt the slave and push on the piston several times until clear of air.

Most likely an elongated hole in the pedal pushrod and/or worn out clevis pin. Maybe also an elongated hole in the pedal where the pushrod is attached.
I know nothing how the BMW 's clutch pedal works but I've seen this on various makes. Lots of lost motion resulting in the pedal engagement/disengagement very close to the floor.
Actually, on my re-read, you said the pedal is too close to the floor. Bad ass-umption on my part, assuming you meant engagement. Sorry...
last one for sale that I saw.. had rust around the winshield, faded, burnt through paint, and an asking price of $2500
Looks like a clean car. First thing to do is buy a copy of the Bentley repair manual for e28 BMWs, it's very good. Second thing is to check out mye28.com, there are some wiseguys there but sort through that and you can find answers to most questions.
There's a spring in the clutch linkage that can pop out of engagement, that may be the problem with the clutch pedal.
Previous owner named him after Gustav Otto
Awesome.
I think I have a complete window motor for an E28 in my basement as well as a Bentley and steelies for snows if you are interested.
D'OH! I just bought an e28 bentley on amazon.
I do need one window motor though.
Did any of you find that the front seats dont tilt very far forward? I can put the e30 seats almost vertical, but the e28 seats force the gangster lean. Both front seats sit at the same angle when all the way forward, and the motors seem to work well.
The clutch bracket looks brand new, which is supposedly the primary reason for clutch pedal issues, but the engagement is VERY VERY hard. I wonder if the bracket broke after the master was replaced, and it was driven long enough to score the bore? Total speculation. But the clutch throw is very stiff, and grabs RIGHT off the floor. The master and slave are brand new.
Also the coolant temp gauge, tach, and mpg gauge dont seem to work. Supposedly disabling the SI board fixes this. I will do this today.
Finally, the right blinkers go really fast but both bulbs seem to be working. The hazards go at regular speed as does the left blinker.
Oh, and for some reason all the interior pieces up front aren't screwed in. I could never understand that.

I'll have to see which I have - they are different from L to R.

I had an 535is with sport seats and cannot recall any issues with them.

It is possible that the wrong master or slave was used or maybe when someone replaced the clutch last they did not replace the plastic nub that supports the other side of the fork inside the bellhousing and it has worn down to the point that it can barely press the fingers on the plate.

You can also replace the batteries easily if you can solder and that way the SI lights will work too.

Try cleaning the sockets really well. One of them somewhere could have corrosion or the tail light "platter" that holds the bulbs isn't seating correctly.
