Summit racing currently has new standard bore gen3 4.8/5.3 blocks on clearance for $299. Its listed online as available, and that's pretty much a no brainier if you need machine work or a fresh block to build

Is an engine block coffee table considered classy if its a brand new block?

They have one bored to stock ls1 bore already in the clearance section of the retail store in tallmadge. $450. Almost grabbed it, will probably kick myself for not at some point

Glad I got rid of the last of my old small block Chevy stuff last year. You can build these 5.3's now for the around the same $$$$ and have so much more to show for it.

Yeah, I imagine these are on clearance becasue a junkyard will sell you a whole good 4.8/5.3 for not a whole lot more than the $400 they were asking for a bare block. That and if you're going to build a LSx from scratch why would you start with the smallest bore iron block?

The 5.3 makes an excellent base for 5.7 builds as it is only a little overbore away. Starting with a new block also means you don't have to get it cleaned/baked or blasted to remove rust/broken fasteners removed/etc.

Machine work on that $400 engine to get it fresh would be 2.5x the cost of a new block.

Ok. Now I'm curious. What items would you buy new to go with that Summit block? Pistons and cam? Could you get away with using junkyard rods, crank, and heads bolted on? The rest of,the accessories could come from the yard. How cheaply could one build a new block?

Oversquare design revs faster. Likes boost. Excellent price. Why not?

Depends on the goals.

Plus they are all aluminum

only one reason to run a used block... it has already been heat cycled thousands of times... so a used block is likely to be a bit more stable

600$ buys a 600hp capable motor on boost.....

If I was building a built motor, why not just buy the LSx block, that will easily take 2000hp?
