Tom Heath and I will be staying in the semi-official GRM rental RV on vendor's row right by the big-top tent.

We will need assistance in disposing of cold tasty beverages! I figure I can count on this group to not let us down!

Be warned- The reports we have say that the Road Atlanta staff isn't allowed to let anyone come on the property until the afternoon. Keep your fingers crossed and/or bring a crisp $20 bill to bribe the security guard at the booth.

He's certainly welcome, just keep him away from me!

I'm all about malted hops & barley, but after a particularly unpleasant night in Japan about 13 years ago I don't mess with the hard stuff. Joe, on the other hand...

I will arrive Thursday afternoon and stay the duration. I will be Camping in Hog Waller and driving a grenn Ranger with the passengers side mushed in what looks suspiciously like a phone pole pattern. I am helping some friends run Spitfires. One is the dark green and the other is the lime/flourescent green one.

I havent camped at R/A before so tell me where the hot spots are after the racing action ends. If it rains like a doudle hung bull pissing on a flat rock I will hightail it to Lawrenceville and crash at my sisters house.

i will probably stick to barley pops, although i've been known to suck down a dozen G&Ts on occasion. i will be camping in my rented minivan, cowering in fear at what might happen if poopshovel and the canexican get ahold of me.

can i also park by the GRM big top?

four more days!

I am looking forward to getting out and seeing some cool stuff. I got into racing too late to see any of the IMSA GT cars run, or any of the other myriad series that ran. Should be great!

Beer is an ancient, noble beverage.

That being said, I've often done things I normally wouldn't at Rd.A, especially after sunset...

I had high hopes. I really thought I could pull it off and be there. Not to be. Life gets in the way some times.
It seems to be shapping up to be a stellar event. Best wishes to all that attend. Know that we will be home looking for your updates.

First, notice that the track map actually has North at the bottom of it. Don't know why, we've just been doing it that way as long as I can remember. Oldest race program I have is the 1979 Camel GT..and the track map in that thing has North at the bottom of it as well.

The GRM tent is usually about half-way down the little grey area on the map the "left" (west) side driving in on the infield road coming from the bridge at 11 (the orange area behind it is usually corral and VIP parking at the Mitty, and the road will be closed to spectators' cars past that turn to the right. You will be able to park in the green "Infield Parking" area across the road from it on the map). If you want to camp close enough to stumble home from the GRM party, the infield area between the racetrack & the road from the tunnel at 10a is pretty good. But it is a downhill grade, the closer (further down the hill) you get to the tunnel, the more likely it'll be flooded if it rains. There's also camping on the other side of the infield road in that (south of the "Infield Parking" green spot) area, but you'll have to walk a bunch to see any of the track at all.

Another popular place is on the outside (west) of the track between 9 and 10b, because it's on high ground, and is easy walking distance to the chicane. Ever since the chicane was installed, it's become a great place to watch passing...but the vintage guys probably won't (shouldn't?) be as agressive there as you'd see on a "regular" race weekend. OTOH, it doesn't flood in the rain. Other places I recommend if you want to watch the cars, and don't mind a longer walk to the GRM Tent..the area along the access road between 3 & 4 is pretty good, but fills up very quickly. And the area around the bathroom before the apex at Turn 5 is fantastic. It's in the trees, so the rain doesn't punish you so bad..and it's up on a hill almost as high as the one above 5 past the apex, (called "Spectator Hill" on the map)..they don't allow any camping in that area anymore, they want it clear because spectators can see all the way from 5 to 3 there (most of the "classic" photos you've seen of cars coming toward you through the Esses were taken from "Spectator Hill"). You can walk down the hill a little, and see the guys getting up to speed through the last of the Esses, and braking for 5 (Great spot for the Petit, BTW: you can see the brakes glow at night).

These days, there is only RV camping allowed down at 6&7. When the track was renovated in the 1990s, most of that area was leveled and paved. The skid pad and go-kart/autoX course is there now (and you can see their locations on the map). I'll bet three Euros that the autoX course is where the Kuhmo event will be. I don't know anything about power/septic hookups over there, because I've never owned or rented an RV. The restroom there was left in place, however..so if the septic tank in your barge is full, you can still do yer business.

Apologies for the length of the post...I was just gonna paste the track map into MS Paint and make circles & stuff on everything, but it seems that the version of Paint in Vista sucks just as much as the rest of VIsta. And, please..no posts about getting rid of the piece of BMW E36. SWMBO actually likes it, so it stays until I stop buying car parts and buy m'self a decent laptop.

Dang, almost forgot...most of the infield bathrooms have "showers", but AFAICR...the water heaters have not been functional since 1973 or so. I know they were already dead when I started working corners in 1986, and my mentors back then were already speaking of the infield showers as places to avoid. Only place I recall hot water available these days is in the big restroooms behind the Tower. Recall that this restroom is also on the border of the original paddock, and the showers will be full of racers & crew early in the morning and a couple of hours after the last race group finishes. It doesn't seem to be as bad at the vintage races as it is at a club race, since many of the vintage guys can shower in their RVs..
