No, not a Volkswagen. Here in the states, anything 25 years and older can legally be imported, etc, etc. Most of the fanbois, myself included, are waiting for the R32-33-34s.
But what I'd like ideas on are things that are legal right now. Don't limit yourself to Japan. Euro and Australia are game, too.
Lets say from 1980 to 1988. Trucks and motorcycles are included.
Go!
E30 touring, Peugeot 205 GTI, Lancia Delta Integrale.

I've heard R32 wiring is garbage. R33's are... meh. R34's are going to be like how MK4 Supra's are priced, no thanks. A DR30 or R31 Skyline would be pretty cool, as would a first gen Soarer, Nissan Leopard Coupe, RB-powered Z31, Turbo Legend Coupe, Starion, Toyota Sera, etc.
I'm holding out for an FTO GP Version R, Evolution I or Evolution II. Love those first two Evo's and the FTO probably could have been a savior for Mitsubishi in the US. I'm not too thrilled about Honda's until the mid-late 90's Accords and Integras.
BTW, pictures will help with the obscure stuff. (Thank in advance.)

Not cut up Hachi Roku.....
Two more years and you can out miata a miata with a Suzuki Cappuccino
This suggestion brought to you by someone who barely fits into a miata but is curious if there would be any way of squeezing into one of these.
I'm waiting for Honda Beats to become eligible. Every time I see one over here in Japan, it just reaffirms how awesome it would be in addition to my S2000.
Definately a Talbot Matra Murena or a Bagheera. Because British cars aren't trouble enough.
2.2 litres, about 2100 lbs.
Here is a left field answer: Volvo 480. I mostly want one because they promised we would get them and never did.

Truck would likely be a true Hilux Diesel
Or, a Land Cruiser Pickup imported from a dry, sand country:
Or, a Troop Carrier with seating for 10 (in theory.)
I grew up watch Wild Kingdom and later The Crocodile Hunter and every African animal show I could find. Big Cat Diary lately.
Definitely a Land Rover LWB Diesel safari-style and any of the FJ stuff mentioned above. I loved my FJ40, I'd really love a Diesel FJ45!

Friend of mine just imported a Delta Integrale after driving it around Europe. Here it is on the rooftop of the Lingotto Fiat factory (as used in the original Italian Job movie):
For myself? The perfect car for every occasion, an E30 Touring:
Not really a whole lot of '80's stuff I'd want that hasn't already been mentioned.
But these:
with this:
will be legal soon.
I've wanted a first generation Toyota Soarer since one showed up at the 2013 MegaMeet.

That is ridiculously hot. Most people over here wouldn't even notice it.

Hadn't thought about a 480GLT for years. Excellent idea.
I'd import a 4wd Delica, with the camper conversion.
Can I have mine with the California roof. Please.
