I might need some help tuning the Rabbit at the Challenge. Anyone willing to help me tune the damn thing? Do you have a wideband O2? I meant to buy one for tuning purposes, but totally forgot. I can weld in an extra O2 bung if anyone is willing to hook a brutha up. Beer on me!

I don't have enough experience to help with the tuning, but I do have a JAW widebend setup that I'll be running on my ms'd challenge car. we can share it if you let me borrow a helmet during the drags

Do you have the car running? Is it running open or closed loop? you N/A or boosted? What MAP sensor did you get for the Megasquirt?

I've got a wideband O2 I can bring.

Kevin Boswell and Jonny Pruit (plus others) will be there and have a lot of tuning experience. If MadScientistMatt is there, that's what he does for a living.

  1. No
  2. not applicable(yet)
  3. N/A
  4. The one that comes with the v3.0 kit.

Since you don't have the car running, I assume the MS is assembled? If so did you also assemble a stimulator so you can check your work (so you don't have to troubleshoot things like injector circuits or spark signal in the car)? Otherwise have you gone through all the 'troubleshooting' steps in each section of the assembly manual to ensure all the readings are nominal (just want to save you the trouble of assembly/disassembly/reassembly at the challenge).

Tuning a MS is usually not a few hour job (especially in boosted applications) but rather a multi-day ordeal because 9 times out of 10 there will be specific modifications necessary for your application that you may not have been aware of at the time of assembly.

Have you spent any time on VW forums and asked around for a base tune? This will help you start the car and have it idle which by itself can be a challenge depending on the level of modifications to your setup.

You can also go over to the MSefi boards for help, everyone has 'the best' way to tune a MS, but I'm with the crowd that doesn't use autotune and instead does individual runs over and over at various RPMs, boost levels, etc and then autocalcs the tables in different areas based on AFR, but by the sounds of your time crunch autotune may be the way to go, my buddies and I have had poor results but our app is boosted...

Maybe another MSer will weigh in.

By the way you're both 'the man' and 'crazy' for trying to tune a squirt in 4 days 1X hours XX minutes and XX seconds.

GOODLUCK!

You new around here?

This is the Challenge... but more importantly, this is 16vCorey!

Aforementioned MadScientistMatt works full time for DIY Autotune. Kevin Boswell has brought perhaps the most well tuned megasquirt to yet show up at the Challenge (placed 3rd last year), an Jonny Pruit is a full time crazy mechanic who is a Challenge 100%er and has brought a megasquirted turbo Yugo for many of those years, and spent more time wrenching under the hoods of other people's Challengers than perhaps anyone else.

Bring it on!

The plan is to have it running by the time I get to Florida. I was just hoping to have some back up in case it runs like crap when I get there. I've obviously never done this before, but I have some friends that are very experienced in Megesquirt(one with VWs in particular, I should be able to get a base tune from him) that have been answering all my questions, but they both live out of town. The plan is to finish the ecu and wiring today. I don't have a stim, but I think I'm borrowing one in the next couple of days. I did run all the tests I could figure out how to run without the stim, and it passed all of those. I left the stock ignition in place, because it works and I wanted to make it as simple as possible. And yes, I'm slightly off my rocker at times, this being one of them. And thanks for the words of encouragement Paul!

Just finished it! Another(probably stupid) question. I'm using v3.0, but I'm using the factory ignition system. Do I need to wire up the hall sensor, like in the v3.0 diagram, or can I just wire to the coil, like on the v2.2 diagram?

"just wire to the coil, like on the v2.2 diagram" That way if you need to swap it with a 2.2 and not change any thing.

Sorry, this year I'm not able to make it to the Challenge.

Getting the system up and running is usually the trickiest part - tuning it is usually easier (the Yugo incedent at Atlanta Dragway notwithstanding.) The fuel side usually needs a wideband oxygen sensor, but if you use something like MegaLogViewer's VE Analyzer and keep a close eye on your AFR gauge it's not too hard to get an acceptable map.

If you can keep the factory ignition controls and have no time to tune, I'd recommend doing that. While you can get large power gains from ignition tuning, you can also really hurt power if you don't have a good way to tune this. If the engine has a vacuum and mechanical advance, I would set up your V3.0 to trigger off the negative terminal of the coil.

I'm not doubting or hating, just trying to help him organize and go over what he can do on his own before he gets there.

Cool.

Cool, how long did he spend tuning it?

Cool, but like I said, tuning isn't that hard, just time consuming, getting it to start up and idle is the challenge, if you've MS'd a car you'd know this. Please don't come down on me because I was trying to provide tips that would have sped up the MSing process considering this is his first time with it and he's on a very short time budget.

GO Corey, I'll be VERY curious to hear about your story more than the others out there this year because what you're doing is straight up ball-z!

No way you can swing by my place on your way down there? Just come across then down. Also if you can send me datalogs I can probably sort out your 'stupids' quickly.

You still have plenty of time...

i'm in the same boat tuning wise, except my motor swap is a little more extreme. a fellow grm'er lent me his stim for testing and setup so i'll bring it as well as the wbo2
