I'm not a huge fan of him, but I'm thinking something has probably been lost in translation there. On a slow day he's faster than 9/10ths of us in any of our own cars.

99% of us..

He won his latest Solo National championship while sitting on his best run from day one that had a cone. He hadn't driven that car before the event.

To Tom1200 original post..

As others said, you can't take a broad piece of advice and apply it to every situation.

What works for driving technique for cars on a road course or autox is going to be different from a stage rally car or even a rallyx car.

And people are mentioning sprint cars that spend virtually their entire life at some kind of slip angle. Totally different kind of driving style..

Pobst has raced production cars professionally so take everything he talks about and put a little bit of context on it.. totally makes sense.. if a car is getting upset by big changes in the racing surface.. that's not going to be a "normal" thing in my expectations of what you build a traditonal autox or road race car car to handle.

Except, that sprint cars on asphalt don't drive with anything like the slip angle seen on dirt. That's why I asked frenchy to clarify.

@spacecadet, Pobst's column is the first thing I read as the advice is always good. I've quoted his column more than once while instructing at track days.

Again I found it amusing that my brain locked in on an obscure situation that really doesn't apply to 99.99% of the world, and as there are a number of self acknowledged pedants on here, I thought others would find it amusing as well. My post did start off with "Oh No"

I'm a hack and a fraud but the way I've trained myself to handle surprise, unwanted slides is to freeze my throttle foot where it's at and catch the car with my hands. I tend to do the same with FWD and AWD cars because even though I can stab the throttle to pin the rear and stop the slide, this could easily lead to running wide and off the track/road.

That said if I use the throttle to initiate a slide on purpose, I'll do the opposite...  lock my hands in place and use the throttle to manipulate load to keep the car on line, only moving my hands if the rotation starts to get away from me.

In reply to z31maniac :

Sprint car drivers don't tend to specialize. While they normally drive on dirt they on rare occasions venture onto asphalt.
Sprint cars have solid rear axles.  ( as did my Black Jack Special ) We  steer using the throttle not the wheel.  On some occasions the right front brake is locked off, It's how I learned to drive Chet Wilson's Offy Killer.

Sprints and midget aren't even built with a RF brake.

Z31maniac I had an old TQ midget with 4 wheel brakes and that Tilton regulator valve was set up to block off / minimize the braking to the RF.

Never admit to being a fraud..............that means you're honest and as such you are no longer a fraud.

Frauds Unite? Sounds like a conspiracy to me................I'm in.

The night I learned how to drive a sprint car ( because his regular driver quit saying the car had no power )  I drove it three laps and Chet Wilson ( the owner) waved me in.  Took a vise grip and squeezed  off the right front brake hose. Then wrapped some duct tape around the pliers and front axle and sent me back out. 7 laps later the checkered flag dropped  end of practice.
With no experience I started last for the 5 lap qualifying race. Wound up 1st.
Finished 1st  in the feature too. Vise grip and all.
