In reply to RossD: I like this engine for pushing through statewide options but there is still digging through cheesy dealers and the mass of slipping automatic trannys.

In reply to Duke: I think I can convince my dad to go with me if I was going to pick up a car, even if it takes a few hours to get there, I will make sure to adjust the search radius to expand my results, so long as I am reasonable the choices should multiply.
Thanks to all so far for the tips.
Lots of e46 cars for sale here: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=33
Don't know if the price ranges will work for you, but it is a very active forum.
Back seat room on a E36 or E46 sedan will depend on how large you are and how far you need to slide the seat back. With the driver's seat in my E36 Coupe where I adjust it, I fit fine behind myself, but I'm not a big guy (5'8)
Put a 6'5 guy in my seat, and I could fit.....with no legs.
Also try bimmerforums.com and bmwcca.org. They have classifieds in the back of Roundel.
Buying the car long distance worked great for me. I had all the agreements in place beforehand and went to see it in person before handing over the check. It was a CPO car that had been a 30 month lease return.
I paid my nephew $100 + gas to drive me up to get my car.
