Time to get new rubber for Betsy. I think I wanna go bronze on the wheels when I do. Is there any particular paint system or plasti-dip like system that is the new hot thing now?
Stumbled across DipYourCar.com and got intrigued by their range of colors
It's funny this topic popped up because just this past weekend I found myself wondering "WTF happened to Plasti-Dip?"
Seems like there was a time a few years ago when everyone was dipping everything in sight and now, not so much. Or at least the hype has died down.
So I'll be interested to see how much of a thing this still is.
I know the price of the cans went way up. Used to get them for like 5 or 6 bucks and now they are like 17 at the local auto parts store.
I like the dip printing options, they can do just about anything you can imagine. No idea of cost tho......
hydro graphics looks interesting , but I have no idea how good your base has to be ,
after they dip the wheel they spray it with clear ,
The carbon fiber graphics look cool but no idea how they hold up ,

Sorry, folks. Should have clarified. When I say "dips" I mean plasti-dip.
Looking for non-GRM levels of DIY (gotta specify cause I know one of all are out there making a hydrodip station as I type this.)

Y'all didn't build one in 2020 when COVID hit, right along with the 3d print farm you also set up to keep yourself from going mental?
Also, in for suggestions, since I have a nice set of BBS wheels I need to refinish.
Duplicolor wheel paint is the best I've experienced and has a bronze color HWP105 available if I remember correctly.
It holds up so well over time, easy to spray, flattens beautifully, dries fairly quick, and the finish reminds me more of powdercoat. I use their satin black color for brackets and other parts as well, it's really great stuff.

Please do better than plasti-dip for BBS wheels.

Not 100% sure I want to actually paint the wheels. But they are a spare set...

Nope. Taught myself fiberglass and finished restoring a boat.

I figured if this thread followed most of the other "how to" threads on GRM, after about a page or two, we'd be deep down a rabbit hole involving paints, dips and powder coating. Somebody would be absolutely insistent that one particular thing would be best based on the exact metallurgical composition of your wheels, the terrain you're driving over, the dew point on the day you're going to be painting them on and the factory color.
Then the thread would fork, and there would be a very in depth discussion between the different pigments of blue used by manufacturers over the decades.
Five pages later, somebody would point out that they painted their wheels with tractor paint, and they look fine. Somebody else would add that they did theirs with nail polish that they got in bulk from an overseas wholesaler, and they had the best finish they ever got, ever.
Somebody would make an aside on a comment from 10 pages earlier without quoting the original post and leave me scratching my head about how that fits into whatever direction the thread had taken at this point in time.
You know, just SOP for these forums.
Curtis painted the wheels on his van a similar color a while back. Some good info in this thread

I'm not aware of anything hot or new. While hyperdip is supposed to be significantly better than classic plastidip, superwrap still looks like it might be the best option in removable coatings... As long as it actually stays removable as it ages.

They're holding up very well. The rattle cans I used aren't the hardest/most durable, but my tires are fatter than the rims, so nothing gets to them.
When I need new sneakers, though, I will be tossing these in the homemade powdercoater.

Also, just for relevance here... See that chrome bar on the grille? It's now black. I scuffed it with a scotchbrite and hit it with black plasti-dip. That's been 1.5 years ago and I was concerned that every june bug and pebble would pull off flecks and show the chrome behind it, but it has held up very well... well enough that I might just use Plastidip on the bumper instead of buying a black junkyard bumper.

The bow tie on grill doesn't match. I thought that was painted to match.
In reply to Floating Doc (Forum Supporter) :
It does match now. I did it at the same time as the grille bar. I just couldn't find a recent picture.

That's pretty spot on!
Now we just need someone to add the copypasta I can't find.

Well, I decided to just look at paint.
If you're anything like me, you hate getting the wrong color, so there's only one thing that makes sense.
Numbered so I don't forget which is which
And, again, if you're anything like me you need a nice 3D surface to paint on to see the colors properly.
Painted matte black so that the chrome doesn't show through and skew the color.

Unfortunately, the day looks like this, so the colors aren't popping.
1, maybe.
4, f' no
5, no
6 is gonna get repaint
7, also gonna get repaint
8, uh-uh. No way.
Numbers two and three not worth commenting on?

Eh.
2 isn't bad, its probably one of the closest to a true bronze color but there's no metallic flake in it so its just kind of flat (and to be fair, most of these were labeled as matte) and 3 is the same with a slightly worse color.
1, 6, and 7 are going to get a repaint of the entire piece so I can see how they actually sit.
