Was looking at the SHOgun (Taurus SHO motor in the trunk of a Ford Festiva), and the supercharged fireblade powered Fiat 126. It got me thinking.
I always liked sleepers.
What's the slowest looking most granny looking hatchback that is of relatively light weight?
Toyota Starlet, in beige.
Early eighties escort? Mazda GLC or 323 hatch? Oh I just had an idea! MS3 drive train In the back of a 323 hatch! What would that be called? 323 GTXXX?
My escort wagon don't look like much. Maybe add klwhatever?

I was gonna say GLC. Whatever you pick you can be assured that a bunch of Puerto Rican guys have already stuffed a rotary or a V6 in one :).
Oh boy do I wish I could get my hands on a starlet for cheap.

You have he answer in your post. Its the Festiva, man.
Late 80's Oldsmobile Firenza. Especially if it has the pillow top velour seats.

Do you want RWD? Because then this:
(Wanna guess how long it took me to find one on Google Images that wasn't in a junkyard? Yeesh.)
But for a Shogun type you probably want FWD. So this:

Jay, is that first one a pony?
The "mystery" car is indeed a RWD Hyundai Pony.
If you can find them, 2nd and 3rd gen. Tercels are good as "grannymobiles" as are Hyundai Accents. If you can't find a Festiva, an Aspire is almost as good. (The plus of using an Aspire is that they were available as 4 doors, so even better sleeper potential.) And if you are thinking Nissan, a Sentra from the about 1987 to 1989 was available as a 3 door hatch, but I imagine those are very hard to find nowadays.
Slowest looking, most granny hatchback eh?
How bout the 3rd Gen Civic?
Not enough granny for you?
i know at one time about a decade a go, there was a guy in the Minneapolis/St Paul area that had a blown small block in a tubbed out Yugo.. he drove it everywhere and even hit the track with it, and it was legendary at the Car Craft Summer Nats car show for about 5 years..
not a hatch, but i also once saw a stock looking Dodge Intrepid that had a built 396 backed by a 700r4 with a rear suspension setup from an 80's Camaro under it. he even drilled the rear axles to use the stock Intrepid wheels.. the only visual cue that there was anything special about the car were the dual 3" tail pipes.
isn't there an old hyundai hatchback that takes a 4g63 with little or no extra work?

The early '90s Excel or Elantra will. Pretty much a bolt-in.
Believe it or not, the Pony will as well but you need to use the Mighty Max / Ram D50 bottom end to fit the RWD bellhousing. Or you can practically bolt in a Starion G54b (2.6 turbo.)
The problem with the Pony is good luck finding one anywhere other than the west coast of Canada. If one has spent any time at all east of the Alberta badlands, it's already disintegrated.
