The "first new car" thread has me thinking. I just renewed my car registration for 2 years with the plan to replace it at the end of this new registration cycle, in May 2014. I would like to, at that time, buy a true NEW car.
Any idea on what to look out for by then? ND Miata, FR-S/BRZ, MS2? What current cars will most likely still be the same, CR-Z, Mini, 500?
I would like something fun, 2 seats should still be OK, RWD is questionable, and bike/kayak hauling ability is a plus, but not a deal breaker.
I figure, if I can get myself motivated now, the better I will be at having a nice down payment saved up.

Hover car? Who knows what the future hold?
Back in the late 1960's when I was in grade school; it was expected we would have George Jetson cars by now.
My crystal ball is broken at the moment but the way things are going Hyundai is looking like it is going to be a major player in the future.
Its wrong wheel drive but I really think these could be awesome...

I am in a very similar situation. I am in law school until 2014, sold my 350Z a couple years ago, and hope to get a new car in a couple years.
I know it gets a lot of hate around these parts, but I won't be surprised if two years from now is the first time you can buy an FR-S/BRZ for less than sticker. I think these two are going to end up being the best thing to happen to enthusiasts since the NA Miata. I'm really looking forward to driving one.
The other product on the horizon that really excites me (the new NSX being way more than I could possibly expect to afford) is the ND Miata. I really hope that Mazda steps up their game in response to the Toyobaru. Maybe a permanent hardtop/hatch/shooting brake version, perhaps reintroduction of the Mazdaspeed Miata, maybe a couple different engine options?
I guess I'm going to go google ND Miata now...
