I'm going to SF for work and have one free day. Actually not entirely free as I have family in Oakland to see.

So if you had extremely limited time, what one or two sights and food joints would you make sure not to miss?

Lombard steet but go early. To avoid all the traffic. If you like hiking go see Mt. Tam state park, great views if you go all the way to the top. We scattered my Grandm' s ashes up there.

A place you absolutely must eat it. Molinari Deli The only time I have ever taken a picture of a sandwich. Get the Italian, thank me later.

If I were going, I'd be researching my old Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen movies and picking out some places to try and find and say I was there. Even if I didn't actually go down Lombard St, I would want to drive by and take a look. Between a trip to Alcatraz and just going up and down some of the streets, that would kill a day for me.

If you want to go to Alcatraz you need to buy your tickets several weeks in advance.

If you like art, go visit Moma.

Walk/drive across the Golden Gate bridge. If you're driving, the best view of the bridge and downtown SF is when you take the first exit right after GG bridge in the Marin headlands and then drive up the hill there.

If you're fed up with the city , drive up to Point Reyes, check out the lighthouse there and the museum about the 1906 earthquake.

We took a Segway tour and was actually a great way to see a lot of stuff in a short period of time.

I love ridding the running boards on the cablecars. Really cant believe they still let you do that. Cable car museum itself is worth a visit.

Don't go to china town. over rated.

Take the streetcar over to the waterfront, check out the seals, loved the WWII merchant marine tour and the submarine tour, walk by the guy who jumps out from behind the bush and try to act like he did not scare you. If you are hungry grab a "crab chowder in a bread bowl" to tide you over. Stop at Giraldelis (sp)chocolates and get the missus some sweetness then either hike or cab to the golden gate and walk over to the other side and back. Great bar on the waterfront with over 50 draft handles to pick from. Great way to end up ended up.

All great suggestions, the Wharf and Pier 39 are fun, the Golden Gate is amazing if the fog is light.

I love grabbing lunch and walking around the Cliff House restaurant. Great views, and worth a drive through the park as well or a walk along the beach.

If in Oakland, head up to the Skyline Staging area of the Redwoods Park and take a quick hike to see some redwoods.

On extremely limited time, I'd want to take a drive and maybe get out and walk a bit on redwood, grizzly peak in Oakland. Drop out of hills on Albany rd(?) in Berkeley and grab beer and pizza at Jupiter on Shattuck. On SF side... In SF? Maybe stroll Van Ness all the way to embarcadero. Also worth seeing: Ocean beach / sutro bath ruins / presidio. I would not suggest haight street. Unless you need some meth. GG bridge, hwy 1 to point Reyes or better, Tomales Bay is super, but out of city.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Unfortunately it was raining pretty solid all day. Fortunately still had a great time, and got a couple decent photos.
