really, what does something like this cost? I hear there are DIY kits but can't find them, and all the company sites I'm finding want me to call or email. I just want a ballpark number.

Not yet. I've found your old thread asking about it, I've found threads on garage journal saying it's expensive, and I've found a dozen blogs and random forums saying there are kits available but not actually found any kits. Probably 20 different google searches now and all the results are garbage.
I did find a 5 minute video of a european coompany putting one together, with a picture of their hardware kit. It's exactly what I want, a piece together kit that 2 people can do in a day, but no sales link or prices.
even pics like this are hard to come by. Looks like some flat stock for rigidity and some extra hinges and you're good to go, but looks can be deceiving
Small airport hangars have them, no idea who makes them.

Shifter position suggests ACVW.
